Verbatim acquires SmartDisk

Verbatim has purchased all assets, including SmartDisk’s digital imaging and external hard drive business.

The purchase includes the physical assets, patents, trademarks, technology and marketing of the company whose annual turnover is estimated at 44 million dollars.

Verbatim will offer a variety of products based on optical, magnetic and flash technology, and is hiring staff in engineering, operations and marketing to make the transition smoother and with a view to future business growth.

In a statement from Shigenori Otsuka, president of Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, Verbatim’s parent company, “The acquisition of SmartDisk’s portable and external hard drive assets is complementary to Verbatim’s current business.”

“Home users and professionals need a wide range of portable storage options: hard drives, optical and flash. Now we can respond to all your storage requirements with a complete family of technically advanced and highly reliable solutions that also have an adequate cost ”.

IDC predicts that around 6 million external hard drives will be sold in 2008.
