Palm has not disclosed the details, but one possibility is that it is the Linux-based smartphone that Palm CEO Ed Colligan promised to launch before the end of 2007. Such a device would offer improved performance compared to current ones. Palm Treo devices by running Palm OS on a Linux kernel, as Colligan told analysts last April.
Palm will also continue to use Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system. In the PDA segment, manufacturers used Windows on 62.1 percent of their devices in the first quarter of 2007 compared to 0.7 percent using Linux, according to data provided by Gartner.
