The state provider of telecommunications services BSNL has updated its Android application, My BSNL, and has added a ton of features to it. These include the ability to pay utility bills, recharge services, receive point rewards for viewing and participating in ad campaigns, a My BSNL Rewards membership, and much more. While the application has been updated and relaunched in the Google Play Store, The iOS version of the application remains the same.
This application is available to BSNL as well as non-BSNL subscribers. The only downside is that non-BSNL users won’t get all of the app’s features, such as the newly added chat feature.
For BSNL users, a service called AddFone, which is part of the “My BSNL Rewards” membership feature, allows you to chat and call the phone numbers in your address book. The chat function is free for BSNL users. This almost turns the application into an OTT service with some features that rival WhatsApp. Of course, if you are not a BSNL subscriber, then this feature is not available to you, so WhatsApp has nothing to fear. Also, there is no information on whether this feature offers any kind of end-to-end encryption, although BSNL does claim that it offers secure chats and calls.
The other important feature added to the app is to reward users for viewing and participating with ads. You will earn points for doing this and these points can be charged to be added to some select digital wallet services or can be used when shopping on BSNL partner sites or applications. You can see ads in 18 categories like Food & Drink, Health & Wellness, Religion, Shopping, etc. The ad display program is completely up to the user, you also have the option to cancel it completely if you are not interested. To be a part of the rewards program, you will need to share your basic personal details, including hometown, gender, year of birth, and more.
BSNL has also partnered with international telecommunications companies to provide access to 44 million Wi-Fi access points around the world. The international Wi-Fi plan costs Rs 501 and can be accessed through the My BSNL app. A feature called ‘Fancy Numbers’ allows you to purchase special phone numbers of your choice after you have submitted your address and proof of identification.
