More than half a million iPhones sold

AT&T has indicated that it has sold nearly all of its initial stock of iPhones within hours of the device going on sale.

According to statements by AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel to Channel 4 News, “Virtually all of our stores ran out of iPhones last night.”

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry indicates to the LA Times that nearly half of Apple Stores on the US West Coast have run out of devices.

Piper Jaffray analysts also estimate the number of units sold in the first weekend at around half a million hands-free headsets.

In another vein, it is indicated that around 2 percent of the first buyers of the iPhone have had problems in activating the device, an operation that must be done through the latest version of iTunes.

AT&T has been working on the issue since it became aware of it. “We’re doing everything we can to get customers to activate it in a reasonable amount of time,” says Siegel, who attributes the problem to the high number of users trying to activate their phones.
