At Power up conference in Florida, Microsoft has officially announced that is beginning to publicly test a new version of the Office application that combines World, Excel, and the Powerpoint application. This application will be available for both Android and iOS.
The app is now like public preview on Android and as beta through Apple’s iOS Flight Test Program. The final version of the app is expected to launch on both platforms by February 2020.
Microsoft says that with the new Office application, users will be able to create new documents, presentations and spreadsheets, as well as edit and view existing documents. You can also “take a photo of a document” and convert it to an editable Word file, create and sign PDF files, or “transform tables from a printed page into an Excel spreadsheet.”
Notably, Microsoft also told him CNet, that the new Office application will not replace the three existing individual applications. “We know that some users may only need to use one of the applications, and it is the consumer’s choice to install the application that best suits their needs. However, if you use all the main applications, we recommend that you use this new Office application as it means you only need to install one app, and it will actually take up less space, “said a company spokesperson.
The individual Word, Excel, and Powerpoint apps have been quite popular on both iOS and Android. On iOS, these apps are among the top 25 productivity apps, and on Android, each one has more than a billion downloads.
However, Microsoft has faced stiff competition from Google, which provides its Docs, Sheets, and Slide apps, which are part of its GSuite productivity tools. In comparison, Google apps rank higher on iOS than Microsoft apps.
