Google’s Night Sight feature has finally made its way to its latest flagship phone, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. While the Google Pixel series is best known for delivering exceptional photography, the new Night Sight will allow users to capture low-light photos that will be visibly brighter with more detail and precision.
Google had announced the feature at its Made by Google event when it introduced the Pixel 3 phones. The company had promised that the feature would roll out for Pixel 3 phones in November.
At the event, Google showed an “extreme” low-light photo on Apple’s iPhone XS and an identical image on the Pixel 3. The latter displayed a brighter image compared to a photo on the iPhone XS.
The new Night Sight feature basically combines machine learning, algorithms, and nearly four seconds of exposure to create a brilliant low-light shot with good detail. Google cites that the feature will work on both the rear and front cameras and that the user will not need a flash or tripod to take photos in low light conditions.
To access the Night Sight feature, the user will need to open the camera app and select the “More” tab on the mode slider. Alternatively, if the camera detects a low-light scene, it will prompt you to activate the Night View feature.
While pressing the shutter button, it will send the “most recent” 9 to 15 frames to the Pixel 3 Super Res Zoom software and generate better results for the night scene. In addition, a learning-based AWB (Automatic White Balance) algorithm has been developed, which will suggest how to change the colors in an image with poor white balance and make it look more natural.
Google has employed some of the DSLR tricks in night view mode by adding in part an “S-curve” for tone mapping scenes that are too dark to the naked eye.
