Does your Moto E 1st generation reboot only randomly? I explain how to fix it

Moto E power button

Introduction

The Moto E is one of the low-mid-range teams of the Moto line most successful in emerging markets such as Latin America. The team works outstandingly for its modest specifications, and because it has a very low cost it is the perfect formula to acquire good equipment at a low price.

However, just over a year after its launch, the first generation Moto E has caused a problem for most of its owners.. It’s about unexplained computer restarts. You can be doing anything or turning on the screen and suddenly the computer restarts itself.

After following many forums and researching a lot about it, everything seems to indicate that it is a hardware failure associated with the power button of the Moto E . This is a failure that is not exclusive to the E bike, in the past I suffered with the Nexus One from a failure that left this button completely unusable.

The Moto E’s power button tends to fail over time and cause random reboots

In the case of the Moto E, the button in most users (in my case also) works correctly, however the cell phone restarts only randomly, and it is because the hardware after months of use presents a failure that causes Leave the power button shorted or pressed even though you are not pressing it, and this causes the system to reboot.

Many have explored all kinds of solutions to solve the problem, but in general they all aim to stop using the power button almost completely, and replace it with the volume buttons and other Apps.

Guide to fix the Moto E power button problem

I rely on the solution that has worked best for me in my case for this guide, but if you want to explore other alternatives I share the link to the XDA forum where you explore several additional alternatives. This one that I am going to explain to you is one of them and personally the one that I liked the most.

Note that it is an advanced processWell, we are going to ROOT the phone and we are going to install an Xposed Framework module to remap the phone keys, which will allow to turn on the screen with the volume buttons and thus avoid using the power button. So you must be prepared to play with your phone in potentially dangerous ways, only continue if you are sure you know what you are doing and have read everything carefully, they are already warned.

  1. Make a backup of all your important things: Photos, videos, songs, etc. Well, we are going to carry out a step in which the internal memory is going to be formatted. Copy everything you don’t want to lose out of your cell phone.
  2. Follow the following separate guide that I have created to explain how to ROOT the first generation E bike in Kitkat. When you’re done with it, return to this guide to continue. This is the hardest part so take your time.
  3. Welcome back, if you are at this point it means that your Moto E finally has ROOT access, now it is time to install Xposed Framework to KitKat to make the volume buttons work as a screen power button. We then go to the official Xposed Framework page and download the installation APK and paste it into the memory of the Moto E.Moto E power button
  4. Open the APK with a file explorer and install it (remember to enable the permission of unknown sources to be able to install programs outside the Play Store).
  5. After installing the Xposed Installer Apk open it and from the download section, search for GravityBox [KK], install it, activate it and restart the phone (be careful, activating the module is essential for it to work).Moto E power button

Inside Xposed Installer go to “download” and look for gravityBox [KK], after installing activate it

  6. then also install the Screen Off and Lock App from the store, which then I explain what we are going to do with them.

Set up your Moto E to be used without the power button

We are almost ready, now I am going to explain what we are going to do to use our phone without pressing the start button, a button that basically we are only going to need to turn on the device when the cell phone is completely off, otherwise we are not going to use the Moto E’s power button.

To turn off the screen without touching the power button

  • The Screen Off and Lock App (by the way, this does not require being ROOT) that we installed before will be used by us to turn off the screen when we finish using our device without having to press the power button. This App leaves an icon on the desktop that we just have to touch to turn off the screen. Keep in mind that only the first time we run it will request permissions. There are thousands of similar Apps in the Play Store to simulate a power button on the screen so you can install the one you like the most, and I use this one because it is very simple and perfectly fulfills its objective.

screen off and lock adds a virtual button on the screen to turn it off

To turn on the screen with the volume buttons

  • Enter the Gravity Box App and go to the section of “actions in navigation buttons” and then go to “wake up with volume buttons” and activate it. With this you can now turn on the cell phone screen with the volume buttons and save yourself using the power button.

GravityBox has thousands of super useful functions, and one of them is to remap the physical buttons of the equipment

With success, this will prevent you from having more annoying reboots on your Moto E. Remember that if you push the power button of the Moto E you run the risk of suffering an unexpected restart. I hope this post is a lifesaver for you as it was for me. If you have questions, you can place them in the comments and I will help you.
