The owner of the popular TikTok video streaming app ByteDance is preparing to develop his own smartphone. The news comes after the world’s most valuable company acquired patents from Smartisan, a China-based phone maker.
the Financial Times reported That two sources have confirmed the news. After recently launching a Instant messaging application called Feiliao, the Chinese startup is already working on a music streaming service. Naturally, with a growing catalog of mobile applications, ByteDance plans to build a phone that will come preloaded with its own applications.
ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has been responsible for this new project and it started after his company acquired many patents from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Smartisan. The company also hired some of its staff. the Financial times the report indicates that one of their sources mentioned that a phone pre-installed with ByteDance’s own applications had been a long dream for Mr. Zhang.
The report also mentions analysts who predict that ByteDance’s phone with its pre-installed apps might not work in the market. “There is basically no room for them in the mass market,” said Jia Mo, a Shanghai-based analyst at Canalys. Facebook took a similar approach by partnering with HTC and Samsung to launch a phone with pre-installed apps based on the Facebook Home platform. Amazon also released the Amazon Fire phone, but it didn’t really work out.
For now, it is unclear if ByteDance will only target China for its own smartphone. However, considering the success of Chinese smartphone companies in India, especially XiaomiIt would not be a surprise if India is an important market consideration.
