Maybe you have captured a video with your cell phone or camcorder and when you try to play it back on your computer you find that it is rotated 90 degrees. How to Rotate a Video with VCL?

This error occurs because many cell phones do not understand the orientation. When you have a rotated video, you can use two free programs.

To rotate video and save the video in the orientation you want: VLC Media Player and Windows Live Movie Maker. This tutorial guides you on how to use VLC Media Player to rotate and save your videos.

How to Rotate Video with VCL?

  1. First download and install VLC Media Player from here: https://www.videolan.org/
  2. Then choose your rotated video from your computer and right click to open it with VLC Media Player.
  3. In the main menu of VLC Media Player, go to “Tools”> “Effects and Filters”.
  4. In the “Adjustments and Effects” window, select the “Video Effects” tab.
  5. On the “Video Effects” tab, choose “Geometry.”
  6. Under “Geometry”, click on the “Transform” box to enable the transform and make sure the “Rotate 90 degrees” option below is selected.
  7. Then choose “Close” to close the window. Notice *: The “Rotate 90 degrees” setting rotates your video 90 degrees clockwise.
  8. If you want to rotate your video to a different angle, please choose the corresponding angle.
  9. Now you can view and play and rotate video with VLC (solo) at the right angle
  10. If you want to save your recent rotated video, in the main menu go to “Tools”> “Preferences”.
  11. Under Interface Settings, look at the bottom left side and choose “Show all settings”
  12. In the left pane, under “Stream Output”, expand “Sout stream”> “Transcode”.
  13. In the right pane under “Video Filter” choose the “Video Transform Filter” option.
  14. Then click “Save” to save your settings.
  15. From the main menu, select “Media“>”Convert / Save“.
  16. In the “Convert / Save” options on the “File” tab, choose “Add …”
  17. To add your recently rotated video file.
  18. Then press the drop down arrow to the right of the “Convert / Save” button to choose “Convert”.
  19. In the “conversion” options, choose “Browse”, select the destination folder (for example, “Desktop”),
  20. Provide a file name for the converted file (for example, “IMG_1822Rotated”).
  21. Specify the output video file type (for example, “.MOV”)
  22. While in the “conversion” options, choose your profile output: “Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4)”
  23. Then press the “Tools” button on the right side to edit the selected profile.
  24. In the profile settings, find and click on the “Audio Codec” tab
  25. Within the “Audio Codec” settings use the drop-down arrow on the codec line and in the list of codecs choose “MP3”.
  26. Then click Save.
  27. In the “Convert” window, press “Start” to start the conversion.
  28. As the “Convert / Streaming” process runs, you will see the following screen.
  29. When the “Convert or Stream” process is complete, you can play your video on any media player you like.
  30. After rotating and saving your videos, you need to reset the VLC player to its default settings.
  31. Go to:Tools“>”preferences“and press the button”Reset preferences“at the bottom of the Preferences window.
