Is it possible to recover permanently deleted files?

Dropbox is a popular storage application, sync and backup files online. When you download and configure the program on your PC, a Dropbox folder will be created.

By dragging and dropping your files, such as videos, photos, documents, music, and movies, etc., in the folder, you can easily sync your files or backup to Dropbox server.

But when you accidentally delete a file or folder, it will simultaneously disappear from the Dropbox server. It will not be completely removed but will be hidden.

Hence, it is completely possible to recover lost files from Dropbox after they were deleted. We will show you how to recover permanently deleted files or folders from Dropbox in two ways.

Recover Permanently Deleted Files in Trash

Dropbox will keep all deleted files in the Trash for 30 days (or longer, if you have a Dropbox Business account or a Dropbox Pro account with Extended Version History).

So, when you permanently delete your important files or folders, you can try to retrieve them from the Trash on the Dropbox website.

  • Click the trash can icon near the search box at the top of the file browser.
  • All files and Deleted folders will appear in the gray list.
  • Select the deleted file or folder you want to recover by clicking on the empty space to the right of its name.
  • Click the Restore button to selectively recover the files or Permanently deleted folders in Dropbox.

Recover Permanently Deleted Files From Cache

If you want to recover deleted files from Dropbox after 30 days, the above method will not help. At this point, you can still try to retrieve the files in Dropbox via the cache folder.

Dropbox maintains a hidden collection, or cache, of your files as backup storage. The files in the cache folder are often stored there after being moved or deleted after syncing.

If your local files are synced with the cloud device when you delete the data from the cloud device (such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive), local files will also be removed.

You can use the Alternative Software Data Recovery Wizard to recover local files. However, these file recovery software cannot recover data from cloud device.
