The project, presented by Mozilla with the name of Boot to Gecko (B2G), will involve the construction of a “OS complete and independent for the Web”, According to the company’s words.

The objective of B2G It seems quite similar to the one described by Google when it started its work on Android and, according to Andreas Gal, one of its managers, aims to end “the dominance of proprietary technologies over the world of mobile devices”.

Currently, developers have to rewrite their applications to make them run on the different operating platforms mobile. Various attempts have been made in the past to create technologies that allow developers to create their applications only once for any mobile operating system, but none have been as successful.

With the advent of HTML5, some experts have suggested that more mobile applications will be able to run directly on top of browsers and still function as native applications. But, at the moment, it does not seem that something like this is going to happen in the short term.

“We want … to solve the problems that prevent developers from creating applications that are – in every way – the same as native applications built for iPhone, Android and WP7,” explains a group of developers from Mozilla, in reference to B2G.
