MacOS Catalina is here, the new operating system for Mac

As every year, WWDC 2019 served to introduce the news of the next version of macOS. On this occasion, Apple has given it the name of macOS Catalina, which refers to an island off the coast of California.

In its day, the latest update of the Mac operating system starred in one of the great news of the day: the replacement of iTunes by three apps already in operation: Apple Music, Podcasts and Apple TV, which should simplify the experience.

On the other hand, those from Cupertino introduced the new Sidecar feature, which allows you to use an iPad as a second screen, as well as new accessibility functions to control a Mac only using your voice.

The new version has finally been made available to all those with a compatible Mac or MacBook. Until now, it had only been enjoyed by members of the Apple Developer Program, first, and those who are part of the public beta program, later.

Goodbye to iTunes: what’s new in Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV

According to Tim Cook, there is nothing that can be done better in iTunes and that is why it has been decided to replace it on the Mac with three applications that Apple users will already know: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV.

On the one hand, with Apple Music you can access more than 50 million songs, playlists and video clips from your Mac or MacBook, as well as having access to songs downloaded, purchased or copied from a CD.

Also, if you want to listen to radio programs, you just have to use the Apple Podcasts app, which has more than 700,000 and now presents them in categories. With the new macOS, you will receive a notification when an episode is available.

Finally, the new Apple TV app makes it much easier for you when looking for a movie or series, although you can also rely on personalized recommendations. If your Mac is compatible, you can also watch content in 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos.

Mirror your Mac screen with an iPad and Sidecar

The inaugural keynote of WWDC 2019 has served Apple to introduce a new tool called Sidecar, which will allow you to use your iPad as a second screen using a cable or simply wirelessly.

This is especially helpful for creators who need more screen to spread out their workspace. Compatibility with Apple Pencil makes iPad a great ally for precision work and adding detail to a design.

More accessibility and security with macOS Catalina

People with mobility problems may benefit from a new benefit that introduces the new software for Mac. Voice Control will allow you to use Siri to control your computer, and all this while protecting the privacy of your personal data.

On the other hand, with macOS Catalina Apple also promises greater security thanks to Gatekeeper, now capable of detecting problematic apps. With the Activation Lock feature, it will be impossible to access or reset your Mac in the event of theft.

In addition, Apple has incorporated the iOS Usage Time app in macOS Catalina so that you can keep track of the time you spend in front of the computer and you can create a schedule that allows you to indicate how much time you want to dedicate to each program.
