The operating system CyanogenMod, is an open source development for mobiles and tablets that was built on an Android version. In the OS CyanogenMod there are some important variations with respect to the official versions released of Google’s operating system, in addition to having incorporated other functionalities from other firms based on free technology.
According to the website of CyanogenAmong these features added to CyanogenMod OS, the possibility of using new themes or launchers natively, a more efficient sound codec such as FLAC, they incorporated a new list of access point names, a VPN client called OpenVPN, Privacy Guard an application to control permissions, support for tethering via WiFi, bluetooth and USB, overclocking with a computer, among others.
The OS CyanogenMod began with the procedure called Root, which was applied for the first time to the HTC Dream mobile in 2008, which is nothing more than accessing a portion of the open source code of the operating system to modify some permission to make changes and customizations of functionalities in native way.
This led to Steve Kondik, founder of Cyanogen.org, along with other developers, implementing the project as an operating system, in fact, several experts have joined Kondik’s proposal in different areas of design, content architecture and codes.
From version 22.214.171.124 of Google, ROMs began to be built that included Google applications, such as mail, calendar, Market, Maps, but legal issues prevented the versions of CyanogenMod from being officially distributed incorporating content licensed by the Mountain giant View. Although after a negotiation the development of the versions of the operating system was allowed to continue without Google’s own apps.
Around 36 versions of CyanogenMod have been made, to which more and more compatible devices are being added, since as improvements are generated, it is possible to update the mobiles and run these ROMs without running any risk of ruining the smartphone .
Security almost killed CyanogenMod
In April 2013, the developers were carrying out analyzes of the possible errors and problems that the different versions of CyanogenMod could be presenting, which is why they enabled a mandatory option with which they collected anonymous data, but that users felt that it was a violation of your privacy.
The data was IMEI anonymously, model and manufacturer of the terminal, operator that supported the service and perhaps a little more … but this was enough for a discrediting campaign to make Steve Kondik take a step back from what was a strategy of statistics, so as not to lose everything.
The alternative outside of Android
The CyanogenMod alternative has aroused the interest of many manufacturers in the mobile sector, since this version of Android, in some way, manages to optimize the operating system, providing better battery performance, processing, transitions and RAM memory performance.
In fact, several manufacturers have already risked implementing this optimized operating system on their mobiles natively, something that allows users to test the platform and testify to the performance improvements, or perhaps the opposite.
Europe dabbles with CyanogenMod
Two new mobiles from the United Kingdom arrive in Spain with Cyanogen OS, which undoubtedly represents an important step for the mobile market in Europe.
CyanogenMod is the open source operating system that the mobile manufacturer Wileyfox has chosen to enter the Spanish market, after its official launch in the United Kingdom at the end of 2015.
The British firm seeks to impose on the market Cyanogen mobiles, As a strong alternative to the OS that dominate the sector, in fact this version of free software is derived from Android. To achieve their mission, they have established a clear pattern that will lead them to their goal: high-performance components, a competitive price, and the advanced customization and security features offered by the Cyanogen operating system.
The strong point of the proposal of these Cyanogen mobiles is the great customization capacity that goes from the tactile and physical keys to more in-depth changes through the theme store. In addition, the applications available on Google Play are compatible since this system is based on Android.
The first two Cyanogen mobiles that Wileyfox will put on sale in our country are the Storm and Swift. Both models have a Qualcomm Snapdragon and Cyanogen 12.1 processor as OS, it has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, expandable up to 128GB with microSD. The pair feature premium finishes, and their 5.5-inch full HD displays are protected by Corning Gorilla.
FX audio technology offers a unique playback experience when listening to music, and Cyanogen mobiles’ built-in LiveDisplay system intelligently adjusts screen brightness and contrast based on lighting conditions and the time of day. In terms of security, they incorporated the TrueCaller dialer that has an automatic caller ID, spam detection and number blocking option.
The battery of these Cyanogen mobiles It is 2500 mAh non-removable and a negative point is that they are sold without a charger. The connectivity they have is 4G / LTE. They will be on sale soon at a price of 279 and 179 euros respectively.
