apple wants to improve the efficiency of oled displays

Manzana is investigating how to improve the technology of OLED displays for reduce energy consumption of these, in order to include them in future models of iPhone Y iPad, according to a patent that just made the public Patent and Trademark Office from United States.

The OLED displays can operate at a lower voltage than traditional displays, such as LCD of the iPhone or iPad current. In addition, the technology OLED has several advantages over LCD (more intense blacks, more contrast and a lower consumption).

The only weak point of this technology arises when it comes to displaying large amounts of white areas on the screen. In these cases the OLED display it has to use a range of colors for each pixel, causing a high consumption that makes the device inefficient.

The solution of Manzana to this problem would include a OLED display transparent located right in front of a totally white background that would avoid the need for the OLED display display this color, achieving significant savings on the device.

The request for this patent from Manzana was presented in April 2010, but it was not until now that the Patent and Trademark Office the US has made it public. The authors of it are Daniel William Jarvis, Albert John Golko and Felix Jose Alvarez Rivera.
