When Microsoft launched its portfolio of Surface devices, it did so with the intention that these would become a replacement for laptops. However, after three generations of devices, it seems that the company had not yet come up with the ideal formula to convince users, at least so far. The Surface Pro 4 is Microsoft's newest addition to the Surface family and it promises some interesting things.
Obviously, it is not an easy task to convince people to opt for a computer of this style, instead of a traditional laptop, but the improvements that Microsoft has made in the Surface Pro 4 will surely attract the attention of those who were thinking about the possibility of acquiring a hybrid.
While is true that these improvements are minimalCombined, they together overcome the weaknesses of the Surface Pro 3. The screen is larger than the previous version, has more powerful processors and incorporates a new cooling system that makes the device quieter. It is slightly thinner and also more powerful.
With all these changes we noticed that, beyond trying to continue selling its concept of tablet PC, Microsoft wants to see how far it can improve its idea by updating the product more and more. The Surface Pro 4 is certainly proof of this effort. Let's see what it really offers us.
The Surface Pro 4 has a 12.3-inch screen with a resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels, thereby reaching a pixel density of 216 dpi, and a 3: 2 screen ratio. Measuring 292.10mm x 201.42mm x 8.4mm, this kit is slightly thinner than the previous version.
As for the weight of this device, 766 grams for the model with Intel Core m3 processor and 786 grams for models with Core i5 and i7, we can say that although it is heavier than many other tablets on the market, if we compare it with a portable, which after all is what it claims to be, it is possible to say that it is lighter and thinner.
The design of this new equipment does not differ much from previous versions, this because Microsoft set its design standards for Surface tablets from the beginning and has maintained it until now. Therefore, the changes that we have seen in the Surface Pro 4 have been few, although they are substantial. The team maintains its chassis in magnesium alloy, but incorporating a much larger screen without affecting the overall dimensions of the team.
Like its predecessor, the Surface Pro 4 also has a support, adjustable at almost any angle, between 22 degrees and 150 degrees. This support is rigid and occupies a large part of the device. Another important feature of this equipment is the Type Cover, the keyboard that makes the Surface Pro 4 become a laptop. Since the release of the first version, this keyboard has been regarded as a great feat of engineering and there is no doubt that this newer version is even better.
The new Type Cover features more spaced keys and a touchpad with a better surface. This keyboard connects to the computer through a magnetic hinge at the bottom of the tablet and is capable of folding down for easy portability.
Software & Hardware
The Surface Pro 4 has the best Intel processors, which promise to offer the team greater energy efficiency and superior performance. This equipment can be purchased in several versions: with Intel Core m3, Core i5 or Core i7 processor. According to the processor version, we find different capacities for RAM memory: 4GB, 8GB or 16GB. The same happens with the internal memory of the equipment, for which we can find three versions of storage: 128GB, 256GB or 512GB. The equipment runs with the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, Windows 10 in the Pro version. In addition, this new tablet has a 30-day trial of Office.
As for the cameras, the Surface Pro 4 it has a main 8 MP, with autofocus for better images, and a 5MP HD front, both capable of capturing HD video at 1080p. When it comes to connections, this kit doesn't differ much from the previous version. The device has a single USB 3.0 port, a Mini DisplayPort for video, a microSD card slot and an audio jack. It also has 802.11ac Wi-Fi; IEEE compatible with 802.11a / b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.0.
The battery the equipment has autonomy of up to 9 hours, with tests based on video playback. The battery life of the Surface Pro 4 is shorter than that of the Surface Pro 3, which had a battery life, according to the company, of up to 10 hours.
Is the Surface Pro 4 a Microsoft hit or not? That depends on our needs as a user. We cannot deny that this new outfit is a beauty, Although it certainly does not end up being a laptop, but it is more than a tablet, there is no doubt.
It is a lightweight, flexible and easy to carry anywhere. However, the same problem arises from previous versions and it has to do precisely with the Type Cover. Advertising for the Surface Pro 4 rarely shows the computer without the keyboard because the idea is to present it as a replacement for a laptop. However, Microsoft does not incorporate it in the box, so it must be purchased separately for about 120 euros.
If we add this amount to the price of the simplest version of the Surface Pro 4, we notice that the team is not cheap. With the wide variety of accessories that we have at our disposal, in addition to the different processor options, they make the base price of 830 euros unrealistic.
But, beyond the price, if we go to the specifications, the design and the performance in general, there is no doubt that we are facing a pretty good team, which not only offers us performance and beauty at the same time.
