The Xiaomi Mi 8 and the strategy of inspiration
We have seen on many occasions this year "inspirations" of the iPhone X. Xiaomi, unlike other manufacturers, has never bothered to hide that it drinks from many competing designs, so this Xiaomi Mi 8 is no exception. The thing is, maybe They've been a little overdone.
Xiaomi Mi 8 SE: features, price, availability …
The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, the "reduced" version of the new top of the range of the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi Mi 8, is already official.
The protagonist of the device is the large screen of 6.21 inch in 19: 9 format due to controversial notch than the crown. The panel technology is OLED (finally dare), and the first thing we see is that the notch it is most prominent than the competition, being much more similar than expected to the iPhone X.
Xiaomi claims that it has the volume of a 5.5-inch mobile, which explains why the battery stays at 3400 mAh.
In the back we have a double camera arranged in a vertical format, and a fingerprint reader in a good and accessible location. We have a finish premium that denotes the quality of construction of Xiaomi, as we were used to with the previous generation.
We lose on the way 3.5mm jack but we also have a USB-C at the bottom, a dual rear camera and a size according to the screen ratio similar to what we have seen with for example the OnePlus 6.
Dual rear camera, conventional
Is dual rear camera is 12 Mpx in both sensors, although it has a telephoto to zoom as in the Xiaomi Mi 6. However, in this case it has artificial intelligence, such as that of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, in addition to being optically stabilized.
The conventional sensor is a Sony IMX363 with f / 1.8 and a pixel size of 1.4 microns and the secondary sensor is a telephoto S5K3M3 with f / 2.4 and a pixel size of 1 micron.
Like the iPhone X or Huawei P20 Pro, it has a studio mode in which to edit light scenes and radically modify photos.
And how could it be otherwise, Xiaomi advances in the beauty mode that is so important for Asian users. Now apply a 3D scan of the face to improve our appearance more precisely.
Unlock with infrared, like iPhone X
If you have noticed, the notch of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is not exactly small. The reason is the same that makes the iPhone X great too: infrared unlocking system.
Unlike its rivals, Xiaomi opts for an advanced system much more secure than we see for the first time on Android. This option is only available in the Explorer Edition variant, the normal one uses technology already seen, by software using the front camera.
This infrared system is supported by its 20 Mpx front camera, which obviously will also serve to take selfies.
Also here we will have a scene detection system to apply beauty mode and we can use portrait mode, although there is only one camera.
Power we hope and appreciate
The grace of the Xiaomi Mi is that they are devices with the best possible hardware at a price rather than content, and this Xiaomi Mi 8 is no exception. We leave with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 together with the Adreno 630 GPU and with 2 memory configurations: 6 GB of RAM and 64, 128 or 256 GB of internal memory.
In connectivity we have it all: NFC chip, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, GPS … Everything you need to not be disconnected from absolutely nothing in your day to day. We lose the FM radio, although it is more than understandable being a high-end.
On the other hand, we have fast loading and in the software section we receive the renewed MIUI 10, the new version of Xiaomi's favorite custom layer running on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. A layer that we talk about in a separate article that we recommend you read.
MIUI 10: news of the latest version of the Xiaomi Android
MIUI 10 is the new version of Xiaomi's proprietary custom cape, and it is released by Xiaomi Mi 8, the brand's new flagship.
Special mention must be made to the GPS of this model, that Xiaomi has expressly improved so as not to have the problems we encounter in daily life, such as loss of coverage outdoors, slow signal reception …
For this they have made use of a dual signal reception system L1 and L5 that makes it faster but also much more effective.
With this hardware, the Xiaomi Mi 8 aims to be a real beast in terms of specifications, and this will be demonstrated in unparalleled performance.
Explorer Edition with fingerprint sensor on screen
But Xiaomi had a surprise in store for us at the end, a variant with a translucent casing and 8 GB of RAM that would have the same benefits as the normal model with one exception: it will have a fingerprint sensor on the screen.
This rumor finally comes true and although it does not reach the mass marketing model, it can be purchased normally.
Availability and prices of Xiaomi Mi 8
The Xiaomi Mi 8 will come in 2 memory configurations, as usual. And we did not expect a higher price than it has, since Xiaomi maintains its value for money of demolition with this new generation.
