The editors of 9to5mac have discovered in the internal code of iOS 14 a series of evidences that confirm that Apple is working on three new models of iPhone 12 with the same sensor in the rear camera.
But only the iPhone 12 Pro models (iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max) will have the technology ToF (Time of Flight).
This will form part of a marketing strategy that will allow the company lower the costs of the iPhone 12 model to offer a more economical solution to consumers. While, on the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models will be aimed at consumers willing to pay a higher price.
We have already seen this strategy on other occasions, but with different hardware elements, such as with the dual camera of the iPhone X, with the OLED screen of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max or the triple lens camera of the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The evidence found in iOS 14 on the iPhone 12 line of 2020
The new camera setup will include a 3D ToF (Time of Flight) sensor, a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. The ToF sensor is intended for the creation of software for augmented reality.
One of the main novelties of iOS 14, in fact, will be a new native Apple application based on augmented reality. An app that allows users to receive information about objects and the environment around them by pointing the camera of their mobile phones at any point.
These are the evidences found in the iOS 14 code:
- The iOS 14 code includes details on new iPhones under the code name "d5x".
- It is probably the new iPhone of 2020, since the iPhone 11 model line is identified with the code name "d4x".
- Only two of these new models are listed with a Time of Flight sensor.
- In theory, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models will have a camera with a ToF sensor.

The functions of Time of Flight technology
The ToF sensor will have a infrared light projector, one similar to the one currently incorporated in the TrueDepth sensors of the iPhone X camera and later models for Face ID facial recognition functions.
This infrared projector will have the ability to capture specific points in the environment in order to generate three-dimensional models based on them. In other words, a user can point his iPhone camera at an object such as a lamp and generate an interactive three-dimensional image on the screen of his phone.
One of the already confirmed purposes of the ToF sensor is related to the Measurements application. Allow very precise calculations of distances and measurements on the new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Ultimately, it will be one of the star functions that grabs the attention of consumers.

Apple present four iPhone models this 2020
The popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo already advanced this information in 2019, assuring that Apple was working on the implementation of ToF technology in the camera system of the iPhone 12 line of 2020.
But the three iPhone 12s that will be presented at the end of this year 2020 will not be the only smartphones marketed by the company with the bitten apple logo. There will be one more. Apple is launching four different OLED-screen iPhones this year. At least that's what all the rumors point to.
As for the fourth Apple mobile phone of 2020, it will be the iPhone 9 (or second generation iPhone SE). An economically more affordable smartphone with an individual camera and the same or similar design of the iPhone 8; with start button, without notch and with bezels that surround the screen not as narrow as in the latest generation models. In addition, recently iOS 14 also leaked an iPhone 9 Plus model with A13 Bionic processor. What do you think about all these exciting news discovered in the iOS 14 code?
