Galaxy S20 Plus review: where is the virtue?
"You will want it if you are looking for the best in design, camera and features and you do not have a tight budget."
Elegant and comfortable design
Battery to spare
Camera without macro mode
Launched alongside the all-new foldable Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung's flagship phone for 2020 doesn't settle for two models – this new generation adds a third with the powerful last name Ultra. This is the most advanced of the S20 family, but with this analysis we want to check if, as Aristotle said, at the midpoint is virtue. Will this philosophical maximum be met with the Galaxy S20 Plus?
With a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, the Galaxy S20 trophy size medium stands out for being a phone with a slim design, with 161.9 x 73.7 x 7.8 mm (6.37 x 2.9 x 0.3 inches), very manageable, neither light nor heavy (186 grams, 6.56 ounces).
Samsung has opted for a back cover that is as pretty as it is practical, attractive for its glossy finish without reflections, light effects or gradient colors, in a uniform gray color that is as discreet as it is elegant. Functional, because you won't have to worry about fingerprint smudges. It was a long time since a cell phone capable of repelling this dirt almost completely passed through our hands (something remains, of course).
The phone only has two physical buttons: the classic ones for power and volume adjustments, both on the right side. It is unlocked with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen and facial recognition, and we have had no problems in our tests.
On the front, the 3,200 x 1,440-pixel AMOLED screen and a 120 Ghz refresh rate (in all of this coincides with its siblings) is only interrupted by the camera of the selfies (top in the center). The quality of this screen is impressive. It shows very sharp and bright images, with vivid colors, and responds very quickly to the movements of the fingertips. If this size fits you, the S20 Plus will not disappoint you to watch movies and series from streamingand YouTube videos and entertain yourself with games.
A super camera full of details
Galaxy S20 Plus incorporates four lenses: 12-megapixel (f / 1.8), 64-megapixel (f / 2.0) telephoto, 12-megapixel (f / 2.2) wide-angle and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. It integrates 3x hybrid zoom and 30x digital zoom, and records 8K video. The selfie camera is 10 megapixels.
This quadruple camera takes photos of the highest quality, as you can see in the image gallery. Zoom works fast and at maximum range (30x) takes acceptable photos. The night mode behaves like many others, that is, giving a light to the photo that is not natural or realistic, but it is effective. If you like to immortalize culinary delicacies, you will love the S20's food mode, which focuses on the center of the plate and enhances the colors to show them more appetizing.
This 2020 generation of the Galaxy debuts the unique capture option. This innovative mode, located next to the photo mode, allows you to capture both photos and video of a unique moment, such as blowing out a birthday candle. The still images taken are not the same, but the phone applies a filter, for example, to provide a black and white version. Zoom does not work in this mode.
one from eleven
Another small function that is very useful for us is to switch from the main camera to the secondary camera while recording. In this way, the person taking the photo or video can exit the recording without having to move the phone to autofocus. And to activate the video camera you do not need to move through the menu to video mode, just press the photo mode icon for a few seconds and the video recording is activated.
Vertical panoramas, Bixby Vision, gifs at the touch of a button, montage of an automatic video from others, creation of stickers, AR Emoji, 3D scanner, applications to decorate the house If creativity is your thing, don't get bored, we assure you.
Specifications, according to its range
The entire Galaxy S20 range is ready to operate on 5G networks, although coverage with this technology is still exceptional. If you do not need 5G, you have the option of acquiring it with 4G (and 8 GB) for 1,009 euros ($ 1,110 dollars), which is 100 euros less than 5G. With the Exynos 990 7nm processor and 12 GB of RAM working together performance is assured. Its 128 GB of memory can be expanded with microSD cards of up to 1 TB.
Battery and fast charge
With a 4,500 mAh battery, the autonomy of the Galaxy S20 Plus gives plenty of all day with moderate use. Like the S20, the phone includes 25W fast charging, although it is not as fast as that of the 45W S20 Ultra. In our tests, it has charged from 0 to 50 percent in 28 minutes and fully in 70 minutes. .
Apps and tools
The phone comes with Android 10 and the Samsung One UI 2.1 customization layer. In pre-installed applications, it has Spotify, YouTube Music, the best known from Microsoft (Office, OneDrive, Outlook and LinkedIn) and, of course, those of Google. The tools include an Instant Transcription call, which translates everything you say into text and works great. The Edge panel or display (folds out to the right) provides tools such as a compass, ruler, surface level, counter, or flashlight.
The Galaxy S20 Plus we have fallen in love with its design premium and comfortable in hand, with a perfect size (very similar to that of a Huawei P30 Pro). And even more, its camera that beautifies everything it captures and offers small utilities to provide an easy user experience and unleash creativity. As expected in a flagship, it is very well served in technical characteristics, although for 1,109 euros more than 128 GB of storage would be appreciated (that is, in practice it is saved because they are expandable).
If you are looking for a bigger phone, it will be worth paying 200 euros more for the Ultra version. We think that this intermediate model will satisfy more people, because the differences between them, except for size, we believe that an average user will not notice. What's more: if you don't care about the size, the smallest in the family, the S20, matches many specifications and software, and the experience is likely to be very similar to that of the S20 Plus.
At the same high-end and similarly priced, you should also consider Android 5G phones like Oppo Find X2 and X2 Pro and Sony Xperia 1 II, though they have not yet gone on sale yet. As more affordable alternatives to the Galaxy S20 Plus, you have the three versions of the realme X50 Pro 5G, which will arrive in Spanish stores in April.
