The Motorola Moto Z3 Play is now official, the new mid-range terminal that brings us closer to Motorola's modularity. For several generations, the North American firm has been careful to bring the MotoMods to the Z line of its range of devices. In this third generation we see significant improvements and above all, we continue to maintain this incredible capacity in the middle range.

A continuous and innovative Motorola
The Motorola Moto Z3 Play follows the design trail of its older brothers, but with the same idea that others like the Moto G6 have followed: we go from aluminum to glass and metal. A doubly premium design that does not make us lose the most legendary functionality of the Z, the MotoMods. The aesthetic lines have evolved with this third generation, and we review them thoroughly.
At the front is the protagonist, a large panel 6-inch with 18: 9 ratio in Full HD + resolution with AMOLED technology. Although the screen frames are very successful, it does not reach the optimization levels of other rivals in the market. Therefore, we do not use the notch and we keep the top frame.
On the bottom we have the Motorola logo totally naked and on the back we see dual camera with LED flash it stands out from the body in a very remarkable way and a glazed rear part attached to the metal frame. Below we have pins for MotoMods They have received a substantial improvement since last year.
On the right side we find the fingerprint reader in the style of the Sony of past generations, of which we already complained in its day. We have the unlock button on the other edge of the phone, and the volume keypad at the top, perhaps slightly higher. All this is complemented by the USB-C from the bottom regardless of the 3.5 millimeter jack.
This last movement is more understandable because the thinness of the phone it's abysmal, having a thickness of only 6.75 mm. Because of this, we have a short battery of 3000 mAh (there was no more space) that may be insufficient, although remember that we have the MotoMods battery, one of which is included in the sales package.
Like many other terminals, the Motorola Moto Z3 Play has been given a facelift thanks to the fashion of the glass, and we have a design premium that will delight the most puritans in design. Of course, due to this, the fragility of the phone increases and due to its thinness we will have to be careful.
An almost manual mid-range
The hardware of this Moto Z3 Play is not that it is a wonder, that is reserved for the superior models, but with this any average user will have more than enough. We start with Qualcomm as a processor, exactly the Snapdragon 636 with the Adreno 509 GPU and 4 GB of RAM along with 32 or 64 GB of internal memory. In addition, we have 3000 mAh of battery with fast charge and all possible connectivity, with NFC included.
In the software we find good news, starting with Android 8.1 Oreo stock. We have very little bloatware by Motorola, with very few dedicated applications and with the possibility of making gestures, using the wizard made by Motorola, etc. Seeing the commitment that Motorola is giving to the issue of MotoMods, we predict good support for updates.
In performance we will not have any type of problem, since although we have not passed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 as some would expect, we will have a general performance of the terminal that will suffice for any average user.
In cameras we have a combination of a dual sensor of 12 + 5 Mpx, a low-light sensor and with the functions that this advantage attributes to us, such as x2 zoom or portrait mode. At the front we have an 8 Mpx sensor next to an LED flash which is already a house brand in Motorola. Considering how difficult this year is in terms of photography (especially in the mid-range), it remains to be seen if this camera surprises us or not.
MotoMods improve in this new generation
Motorola announced that the support of MotoMods, the modules that you can connect to this terminal, would have a minimum support of 3 years. Not only will the MotoMods that we have purchased before be compatible with the Moto Z3 Play, but we have new improved MotoMods And the same system has received improvements that make MotoMods more efficient in their work.
We are pleased that Motorola has continued to choose to bring MotoMods to the more "intermediate" range of the Z family, as it would even have been a logical move that they would have been reserved exclusively for the higher models.
Motorola Moto Z3 Play price and availability
