Huawei MatePad Pro 5G: the best of both worlds

Huawei MatePad Pro 5G tabletDaniel Matus / Digital Trends in Spanish

Can you imagine having the best of a phone on a tablet, and vice versa? Well: that is the intention behind the new Huawei MatePad Pro 5G that we have been able to meet today in Barcelona. We have fallen in love with the phone of the Chinese manufacturer before, and therefore the name Mate already deludes us.

Said directly: the functions normally found in smart phones can be found on this tablet. The MatePad Pro 5G is a fabulous device, although we still do not know if to leave behind the typical problems of Android tablets, the same that continue to keep the iPad as the sovereign queen.

Huawei chose a lightweight magnesium alloy for the body of the MatePad Pro 5G. The tablet is available in gray and white, along with a couple of models in green and orange vegan leather. We were able to see them all, and it feels like a better quality tablet than many others in the competition. The colors of its screen are defined, with a level that has absolutely nothing to envy either Apple or Samsung.

The tablet lacks antenna lines that extend along the back of the chassis or on its sides, and these are integrated into the magnesium itself. The defined shape of it and the self-drilling camera on the screen, gives it a clean and modern appearance.

Screen talk: 10.8 inches with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600, 280 dpi, 540 nits of brightness and DCI-P3 color support for a cinema-like image. We will have to spend more time with her and squeeze it with series and movies, but we loved it, with an excellent level of color, contrast and brightness. In addition, the 16:10 aspect ratio supports the video better than the iPad 4: 3 ratio.

To all this, let's not forget that this is the first tablet with 5G under the cap. It is an impressive technical achievement on such a thin device, with no antenna bands or massive bezels around the screen. All this is the work and grace of the Kirin 990 and the integrated 5G modem. It connects to Sub-6 5G networks, but not mmWave networks.

Is 5G needed on a tablet? And why not! The 5G indeed be a good proof of this. So far we can say that Huawei has done its homework, anticipating a product that will surely have imitators. The optional keyboard also makes it a more than adequate laptop.

The MatePad Pro 5G does not have integrated Google services, so forget about Google Play or associated applications. The Huawei app store was an important announcement in this Monday's presentation, and everything indicates it is an absolute priority in the Chinese company. You can use alternative app stores like Amazon, or find an alternative solution, by installing Google applications using Phone Clone. In Huawei they are aware of this, and we bet that in a short time a good part of Google's applications will be supplied.
