Galaxy Z Flip: first impressions of Samsung's new folding

After a criticized Galaxy Fold, although it had a second review after the negative comments that its screen received, Samsung officially considered what could be considered its second folding phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, whose availability is scheduled for February 14 of 2020, although in Mexico it can already be purchased in presale, as well as in Spain.

In Digital Trends in Spanish, we had the opportunity to lay hands on this smartphone which has a type format clamshell, the same style of the new Motorola Razr.

Design

The first thing that stands out is that the Galaxy Z Flip feels very light (183 grams). It is not like other high-end cell phones that gain weight for their complex camera system, battery and other latest generation specifications. It is a very compact device, which fits in the palm of your hand and in any pocket. That yes, with a mirror effect finish, the fingerprints are immediately marked when taken, as it was also seen live in his presentation this February 11.

When the cell phone is open, its Infinity Flex screen, designed with the first folding glass in its class, according to the brand, reaches a size of 6.7 inches. It is a Dynamic AMOLED screen, which is better than Super AMOLED, and the colors it shows are sharp and precise, although in this first approach it was not possible to play YouTube and Netflix content. In the middle of the screen, the fold is visible to the eye and even to the touch, but it does not disturb visually.

In the hands, both closed and open, the cell phone feels comfortable, safe, robust and easy to handle, even with just one hand.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the design of the Galaxy Z Flip is perceived friendlier, closer to what the user is accustomed to using every day. Its Hideaway hinge, right in the middle of the cell structure, also contributes to a more intuitive experience. This hinge has some nylon fibers that when opening and closing make a sweep out of dust and dirt particles so that they do not enter the screen, as Samsung has explained.

It is true that when the device folds, it still reveals a space, something that does not happen with the Razr. It does not bend completely like a book or magazine, but what is clear is that this space is more discreet than that of its folding brother, the Galaxy Fold.

Selfies with the main camera

The new phone's screen is interrupted by a notch in the form of a circle, where its 10 megapixel front camera is placed. The main camera is dual (12 megapixels), and next to it stands out a small 1.1-inch Super AMOLED panel that allows you to see notifications of all kinds when the Galaxy Z Flip is closed. This tiny display is reserved for the function Always on display, which shows the time, date and status of the battery. It also allows you to slide your finger to control music playback and view notifications. In this last use, when you select, for example, a WhatsApp message, when you open it, you can access this application directly on the big screen. In addition, from that small screen you can answer or reject calls. It seems to us a good solution to not have the need to be opening the smartphone in every moment.

Through this small screen, the phone allows you to take selfies with the dual camera: simply click on the fingerprint button, which is located above the right side, and you can capture your best face by simply moving the palm of your hand or through the lower button on the right side.

The camera of the Galaxy Z Flip, like the Galaxy S20, opens the mode Single take that you don't see in other mobiles: when you activate it, it captures photos and videos of that moment (up to 10 photos and 4 different videos selected with artificial intelligence)

Flex mode

Galaxy Z Flip brings something never seen on a mobile, and that Samsung calls Flex mode. It is activated by setting the half-open phone (between 90 and 130 degrees) and allows multitasking, since it divides the inner screen into two halves. Right now it is only configured with some applications, including the camera. Thus, when you put it in this position, the top part of the screen shows what the camera captures and the bottom part is used to press the virtual buttons of the camera.

At the moment, only the Photo Gallery, the camera, the Google Duo app and the function are optimized for Flex mode Always on display. In the next update will include YouTube. The idea is that all Samsung applications adapt in the future and develop new ones, as Samsung has explained.

Performance and battery

In our brief test, we did not notice performance problems and the phone responded well when opening and running applications. Inside, it has an eight-core processor, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.

Later, it will be known if your 3,300 mAh battery, compatible with fast charging, is sufficient for a full day or if it is necessary to charge it part-time.

At a first glance, it is an improved cell phone in question of design and that can respond well to the different demands of productivity and entertainment of the users. That s, like most of the equipment in its class, is not a smartphone cheap: it costs $ 1,380 dollars (in Mexico, its price is $ 33,000 pesos and in Spain, 1,500 euros).
