Patrick Mahomes breaks the legendary "Madden Curse" with the Super Bowl victory

For decades, EA Sports' annualized football series, Madden, has featured a leading NFL athlete on the cover. Like any other sports franchise, it is an iconic tradition, but Madden's cover athlete has a special kind of superstition: The Madden Curse. However, it seems that the Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has really broken the curse in a way that no other player has done.

For those who are not aware, Madden's Curse is something that is placed on the Madden cover athlete of the current year. For the past 20 years, almost all the players who honored the cover have been prone to traumatic injuries, significant career losses and other incredible bad luck.

On Sunday, February 2, the Kansas City Chiefs took home a much-sought Super Bowl victory with the precious QB and Madden 20 athlete Patrick Mahomes in front. Mahomes is Madden's only cover athlete in playing and winning a Super Bowl in the same season as his cover appearance.

Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski appeared on the cover of Madden 17, which launched the same season the Patriots won Super Bowl LI. The trap, however, is that Gronkowski suffered injuries before the big game and had him on the sidelines, which means that Mahomes had much more pressure to really embarrass this curse.

Patrick Mahomes suffered some injuries early in the 2019 season with a sprained ankle and a dislocated rtula. However, the 24-year-old player persevered to become the Most Valuable Player of the Super Bowl LIV thanks to a performance in the fourth quarter.

The NFL midwest team consolidates its victory with a final score of 31-20 after being down during the first 3 quarters. Mahomes had problems from the beginning, but led the team to a victory at the end with 2 consecutive touchdown passes.

Against all odds, Mahomes is the only player in the 20 years in which EA Sports has dedicated a single player to the cover of Madden to play and win a Super Bowl in the year of his appearance on the cover. The young rookie continues to make massive waves throughout the sport, defining himself as a legendary player.

Madden 20 is now available on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
