LG and ZTE decide not to attend MWC 2020 because of the coronavirus

With just a couple of hours of difference we have learned that both the Chinese company ZTE and the Korean LG have decided to get off in some way from the next Mobile Phone World Congress, which will be held as planned that ensures their organizers between 24 and February 27 next in Barcelona.

The reasons for this resignation have the same name: coronavirus, although the statements of both companies approach the issue in different ways: for not putting their own workers at risk, LG alleges.

Although at first, it seemed that ZTE also left the MWC to avoid uncomfortable situations to the attendees and exhibitors, we are a kind company, and we want to prevent people from feeling uncomfortable (with our presence), according to statements to The Verge, It is true that he has only canceled a press conference scheduled for February 25, according to the official statement:

“Towards 5G business success, ZTE demonstrate during the Mobile World Congress 2020 its most outstanding achievements in 5G innovations and comprehensive 5G solutions in both 5G Network Practices and 5G Business Exploration. In addition, we will share with our attendees our experience and success stories in the global field of 5G network construction. We will be at stand 3F30 of the Mobile World Congress in Hall 3 of Fira Gran Va. The ZTE device press conference scheduled for February 25, which is just one of the many planned activities, has been canceled. However, we will show a wide variety of new 5G devices at the ZTE stand during MWC 2020, as planned. ”

For both companies we had hours scheduled in Barcelona, especially for LG: on Sunday 23 we expected the launch of the LG V60 ThinQ, which will arrive with a second redesigned display case accessory (such as the G8X ThinQ). The presentation will be later, almost certainly, and it will be necessary to see if this descent is, in the long run, a good decision.

S: these are two companies among the more than 2,400 participating in the MWC, where more than 109,000 attendees from 198 different countries are also mentioned. But it is impossible at this point to foresee what a frightened big business could cause in a congress that begins in less than 20 days. The possibilities here open in all directions, for good, for bad, for very good and for worse. Undoubtedly, the next few days (the next few hours!) May even be decisive for the mobile phone market in 2020. Never forget that the MWC is the most important meeting of the year for this sector, and a good part of the related businesses not only manufacturers , eye goes through the condal of the City of Barcelona.

Precisely, if more reputable companies begin to abandon this ship, the main affected will undoubtedly be the Catalan capital. In 2019, the MWC meant for Barcelona a net profit of 473 million euros and 13,900 temporary jobs directly related to the appointment.

But if, on the other hand, other large companies decide to stay, the decision made by LG and ZTE may be expensive. One less exhibitor means more eyes on the products present, with the added publicity of having decided to participate against adversity, by our clients and partners. We will have to be very attentive and see what happens with Huawei, Sony, Nokia (HMD), Xiaomi and other manufacturers.

For the rest, Samsung can breathe with relative calm, as they present their new phones next Tuesday, 11 in San Francisco, California, in a play that is getting better color every time.

Manzana? The MWC has always looked far away, and all turbulence always ends up benefiting them.
