Sony now manufactures
electric cars? That could be assumed with the presentation in Las Vegas, at the fair
CES 2020, of the
Sony Vision S, an electric car prototype with which the Japanese company
I surprised everyone.
Strictly speaking, it is very unlikely that this design will ever circulate on the streets: rather, the company shows its vision for the near future car and (more importantly) how it can contribute something.
Thus, the Vision S is designed by Sony along with a large number of companies that know how to make cars; Sony provides the rest, such as the 33 sensors that the car has in its body (including cameras, Lidar, distance sensors, with ultrasound and more), the surround audio system, or the screen that dominates the entire dashboard.
The company's artificial intelligence software is also present in the Sony Vision S to assist in the operation of the car; These 33 sensors form what the company calls a cocoon of protection, with detection of distant and near elements.
The system developed by Sony allows a Level 2+ assistance (parking without assistance, automatic lane change on a highway), and according to the company the same hardware allow eventually to carry
Level 4 of autonomous driving, in which a computer takes full control of the vehicle.
When it comes to entertainment, Sony uses a multi-speaker system to ensure that each passenger gets the best possible experience, with the inclusion of speakers in the seat heads, multimedia management, presence detection in each seat and more.
All this technology is already available, but Sony did not indicate at what time it could reach the streets, either with a car of its own brand (very unlikely) or in partnership with another more traditional firm.
