This Saturday, January 25, a joint protest against 5G is held worldwide. In Spain, concentrations have been announced in Madrid, Barcelona, ??Pamplona, ??Segovia, Tenerife and La Palma, although members of platforms from other parts of the country have also shown their interest in joining the initiative. This is the case of the Association Rate against Radar, from which they assure that the threat to life on Earth that this technology will generate is even more immediate than that of climate change, since only holding the mobile phone for a few minutes is a clear damage to the nervous system and cells.

Given the alarmism generated by these groups, it is not surprising that there are those who are infected with these fears and fear what the 5G arrival I can do to your health. But are there really reasons to worry? The truth is that there are other issues to worry about much more and, of course, climate change is one of them.

5G under control

The 5G refers to the fifth generation of wireless technology for digital mobile networks.

It is based on microwave radiation at frequencies similar to those already used previously, including those used by the DTT, hence, when it began to be used, it was necessary to re-tune the television.

Non-ionizing radiations are those that cannot cause DNA damage.

Apart from all this, they are included new frequencies, which will make the information flow faster and in a much more directed way. As a consequence, the use of antennas as large as those currently used will no longer be necessary.

Now, should we fear these new frequencies or even those that were already used before? It is necessary to start from the basis of non-ionizing radiation and, as such, are not able to produce DNA alterations that can contribute to the development of diseases such as cancer. Despite that, it is true that it is not safe to use them anyway. He has explained it to Hypertext with a very simple example Alberto Njera, physicist, professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha and member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency and Health (CCARS). No one will think of it, I hope, to get into a microwave, because that radiation is very intense, so much that it can cause heating, so we use them at a frequency very similar to that of the WiFi router, the expert recalls. What's going on? Well, one emits a radiation of about a million times more intensity. Therefore, with this example we know that there are intensities that produce effects and intensities that do not produce effects. Let's see, it's simple, if you drink a glass of water nothing happens, if you drink 30, you probably end up in the hospital.

For this reason there are institutions such as International Commission for the Protection of Non-Ionizing Radiation (ICNIRP), whose role is to evaluate the available scientific evidence, determining at what levels effects occur. This does not only affect mobile phones or WiFi, but also the entire radio frequency spectrum from 100kHz to 300 GHz, which will go from the AM, FM, TETRA radio stations, amateur radio, mobile, antennas and radars, clarifies Njera. In addition, they evaluate in infrared and the visible spectrum-think about photodepilation-, much more energetic than what concerns us with 5G.

And what has ICNIRP said about this fifth generation technology? Basically, that the frequencies used are far below what is established as dangerous. He explains in BBC one of the advisors of the committee, the professor Rodney Croft: "The exposure produced by 5G has been considered in depth by ICNIRP and restrictions have been established below the lowest level of related radio frequency that has been seen to cause damage."

Also the World Health Organization He recalled that electromagnetic frequency exposures below the limits recommended in the ICNIRP regulations do not appear to have any known consequences on health and Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE, for its acronym in English) has published an update of its guidelines on radiofrequency exposure limits in which nothing is changed with respect to the provisions of 3G and 4G.

Faced with this situation, attention should only be paid to very specific cases, such as antenna workers, whose exposure is much higher. It is precisely the reason why they carry out their work with meters that alert them in case of exceeding the safe limits.

What do the studies say?

Recently the mayor of Barcelona, Ada ColauIt has been news to publish a column against this technology, in which it is requested that its implementation be postponed until it is known with certainty that it does not affect health and the environment.

"Science shows no denials," explains Njera

This is the request of the representatives of many associations against 5G: studies that affirm that these radiations will not put our health in danger. However, as Njera explains to this medium, science does not work that way. Science shows no denials, sentence. I cannot prove that something is harmless, what to prove is whether it causes effects. Today, after more than 30 years of generalized radiation exposure of this type (let's not forget the Sun or other really dangerous ones), we don't have any systematic review or meta-analysis (study of studies that have real strength in science) that has described health effects at the usual exposure levels .

As for the possibility of cancer, in 2013 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classify these radiations in your list of carcinogens in the category 2B, in which agents are found for which there is limited evidence of their association with the disease in humans and insufficient in experimental animals. They share this place on the list with talcum powder and aloe vera extract. Above, in the 2A, there are night shifts, red meat and hot mate.

There is more to see than, according to a study carried out by the National Cancer Institute of the United States, the rates of brain cancer in this country decreased between 1992 and 2016, this being a time in which the mobile phone and the technologies associated with it have had a great boom.
