In the endless quest to increase screen space on smartphones
LG has a new idea
A case that is actually a large folding OLED screen that can wrap the phone.
This is according to a new LG patent discovered by the Dutch media LetsGoDigital (via Android Central). The patent, filed with the WIPO Global Design Database, as well as the Hague International Design System, describes a case that is essentially all screen, and can be combined with the mobile phone and used as a folding screen.
It can also be set next to the phone (connects to the phone through a special connector, placed vertically), which allows you to obtain a large amount of screen space.
It would not be as elegant as having a really foldable phone, it has a great advantage: if the folding screen is broken, you should be able to easily replace it since it is completely separated from your phone.
The company was one of the first to fully adopt modular phones; He was also one of the first to place a dual camera with a wide lens, as well as a fingerprint scanner, on the back of his phones.
And companies like
Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi and Huawei announced folding smartphones, LG took a different route, by launching a pair of phones with a removable secondary display.
The last in the line
LG G8X ThinQ: it's a pretty good phone, but its secondary display / case is clumsy and is more likely to bother you to help you in everyday use.
The variant envisaged in this new patent seems much more elegant, but, again, it is only a patent, and there is no guarantee that it will soon or never become a real product.
