Microsoft stop giving Windows 7 technical support on January 14, 2020, so if you still use this version of the operating system, you should consider upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 so that your computer is safe from security threats like virus and malware. The Redmond giant allowed to upgrade for free to version 10 but this is no longer possible. Despite this, you can still do it, following the steps of this guide.
Step 1: buy a Windows 10 license
The first step in this process is the purchase of a Windows 10 license. Since Windows 7 users can no longer upgrade to Windows 10 for free, they must purchase a Windows 10 product key through Microsoft or any other Another authorized distributor. You can also try to get Windows 10 for free if you meet the requirements to avoid paying the prices listed below.
Currently, you can purchase Windows 10 Professional for the price of $ 200 dollars in Microsoft Store. You can also find Windows 10 Home for a cheaper price of $ 140 dollars. This is a good option if you are worried about the budget and do not need features such as Windows Sandbox or Bitlocker.
Step 2: Create a USB installer for a clean installation or choose to update with the Windows 10 Media creation tool
If you choose to purchase Windows 10 through Microsoft, you will see two options. You can download the operating system to your machine as an ISO file or the option with USB is also possible. If you choose the latter, you will receive a copy of Windows 10 by mail in your home. This is an excellent option if your internet connection is not stable enough for the 4 GB download.
The download option, meanwhile, allows you to create an installation medium on a CD or a USB on your own so you can completely erase your hard drive and “clean-install” and upgrade to Windows 10. You can also double-click in the ISO file to install it and open the Setup.exe file in the folder to continue. However, if you choose to have an installation USB delivered to you, you can continue to do the same, as we will describe later.
In fact, it is possible to do that "clean installation". Basically, once created the support, you can adjust the BIOS settings to be able to boot from the installer and follow its guide step by step.
However, regardless of the format you buy, you are likely to receive a product key in an email. If you are interested in updating your existing installation of Windows 7 without having to delete, then continue with the next step. This is a much simpler and easier process.
Step 3: Download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool or open Setup.exe from your USB
The easiest method to upgrade to Windows 10 is to download and open the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. Or, if you purchased a Windows 10 USB, open the USB drive in Windows Explorer and click on the Setup.exe file. In both cases, you should note that whenever the window is open, there should be an option that says Update this PC now.
Click on that option and follow the prompts. If you have obtained the Microsoft Windows 10 Media Creation Tool online, you will need to download Windows 10 first. If you are using USB, there is no need to wait.
In any case, see some indications. A notice informs you about problematic applications or services that may conflict with Windows 10. It is up to you to solve these problems.
At some point, you may also have to enter the product key you received by email. Depending on your situation, I may not ask you. However, in most cases, you must enter the password if it is not automatically extracted from your Windows 7 computer.
Step 4: wait while your device updates and then check for driver conflicts
Now that you have entered your product key, you can sit while your PC is updating. A normal update will take approximately one hour, depending on the speed of your CPU and the age of your PC.
When you're done, you might want to go to the Windows 10 Device Manager and make sure that the new operating system reads the hardware correctly. To do this, right-click on the Windows logo and select Device Manager. Click on each of the categories, and if you see something with a yellow color (!), Click on the right mouse button and choose the Update driver option. Windows then search the internet for the appropriate driver and try to install it. If you notice that too many drivers are missing, your computer may not be compatible with Windows 10 and you may have to buy a new desktop or laptop computer.
