During the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus launch event last year, Apple also presented its first truly wireless headphones called AirPods. In addition to offering slightly better audio quality than the Apple EarPods that come with iPhones, it also offers certain smart features, such as automatically stopping music when removing one of the AirPods and being able to play twice to access Siri. This was made possible by the company's custom-designed W1 chip that powers these headphones. However, with the recent update of iOS 11, you have much more control over your AirPods than just a double tap for the Siri function. This includes customizing the controls for each AirPod individually. For example, users can now assign functions such as play / pause, the next track, the previous track, etc. separately for each AirPod. If you are interested in trying this already with your AirPods, let's take a look at how to customize the features of AirPods in iOS 11:
Customizing AirPods features in iOS 11
Note: I tried this on my iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 6s, but it should work on older iPhones, as well as the new iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X.
First of all, you must ensure that your AirPods are connected to your iPhone before proceeding to customize the controls. The procedure is far from complicated, so simply follow the steps below to do it without problems:
- Go to Configuration on your iPhone and tap on "Bluetooth" to access the configuration of the Bluetooth device. Now, just touch the information cone for connected AirPods denoted by "i" As shown below.
- In the next menu, notice the option to customize the functions for the left and right AirPods. To customize the function for left AirPod, simply tap "Left" and choose the function according to your preferences. You can choose between Siri, Play / Pause, Next track and Previous.
- Similarly, to customize the function for the correct AirPod, simply press "Right" and choose according to your preferences. Personally, I prefer to use the Next Track function on my right AirPod and the previous Track function on my left AirPod.
Customize AirPods features in iOS 11
Well, that's all you have to do to customize the function of each AirPod individually. We are glad that Apple has finally decided to give users more control over their AirPods with the recent update of iOS 11. Until now, users had to use Siri to perform most of the functions. Although it was easy, it was quite uncomfortable to try to speak with his voice assistant while in the public. With the iOS 11 update, you no longer need Siri, as you can simply tap twice on your right or left AirPod to perform certain functions such as Play / Pause, Next track and Previous. So, are you ready to take advantage of this small but significant change that Apple has introduced in iOS 11 specifically for AirPods?
