When I left the first Axiom Verge four years ago, the similarities with the titles of Metroid 2D were amazing. Going much further than other games of the Metroidvania genre, Axiom Verge was more like an appropriate spiritual successor to the Nintendo Metroid 2D games. From gameplay and global design to the oppressive atmosphere of terror and light, the fans found an unlikely exit to get their Metroid solution. It's not that Nintendo has given the franchise the attention it deserves.
Hiding in a freight elevator in Antarctica is what appears to be an ancient alternative Earth, complete with mountains, lakes, deserts and the ruins of a civilization. But you have the feeling that something is lurking beyond the limits of reality, waiting to attract you. You may think that you already know the world of Axiom Verge. Think again
Now, at the end of the generation, Thomas Happ Games has shared the exciting news of a sequel with Axiom Verge 2. The sequel presents a new cast of characters, enemies, history and world. One thing that stands out immediately is a more unlimited use of color, while the first game may end up being a bit monotonous. A welcome change.
At the moment, Axiom Verge 2 is only confirmed for Nintendo Switch, but the developer openly declares that news on more platforms will arrive soon. It makes sense since the game was presented during the live broadcast of the indie Nintendo show yesterday. Seeing how the first came out in almost all systems, it is a safe bet to assume that the sequel will follow suit.
