If you have upgraded your Mac to macOS Catalina, you may experience a frustrating error in the System Preferences, where you are repeatedly asked to update your Apple ID settings. No matter how many times you try, that little red icon "1" in the Dock does not disappear, and will constantly bother you to update your settings. Fortunately, there are some solutions that you can try, which go from simple ones (close session in iCloud) to the most complex ones (eliminate corrupt elements of the keychain). But do not fear, since all the steps are easy to follow and are not particularly complex.

First, try the traditional solution

When you see this error for the first time, Apple will tell you to follow the instructions on the screen to fix it. It may be that you do the solutions and it is always worth trying first. If it doesn't work, try the steps below in this article.

Step 1: Open System Preferences, click Apple ID, then click on General description in the left column.

Step 3: A window will appear indicating that “some services in the account will not be available until you log in again”. Click on Continue.

Step 5: wait a few seconds; The next window may take a while to appear. When it does, you will be asked for your Mac password. Enter it and click To accept.

Step 6: Finally, if you have an iPhone or iPad, your password may be requested. If so, enter it and click on To accept.

Step 7: If everything went according to plan, your Apple ID settings should now be updated.

Leave iCloud

It is possible that the previous tutorial only provides a temporary solution and that the error returns in a short time. If you still have this problem, it may be useful to log out of iCloud.

Step 1: Open System Preferences, then click on Apple ID.

Step 2: at the bottom of the window, click on Close session.

Step 3: You are asked if you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data on your Mac. Make sure the checkboxes are marked next to all entries in this list, then click Keep a copy. If you use iCloud Photos, you may also be asked to finish uploading your photos; click on Continue updating and wait for it to end.

Step 4: Next, you'll be asked for your Apple ID password to disable Find My Mac. Enter it and click Continue.
