Your next cell phone can make a simultaneous translation during a call and use your voice in the other language

It was one of the most celebrated moments at the conference Qualcomm gave in Maui, Hawaii,
their annual Tech Summit meeting, to present the latest innovations that will have their next
Snapdragon 865 chip, which will finally end in some of the top-of-the-range phones with Android in 2020.

One of the surprises came when in a demo they showed for the first time how in a phone call, Ziad Asghar himself, responsible for the Product area, Artificial Intelligence, who
He spoke in English, was immediately translated into Chinese, with the same tone of voice. That is to say: the same person could speak in a language that he did not know with another person live and direct. As if he knew. It is not the first time that a simultaneous translation technology is shown (
Microsoft does it with Skype, for example). But now the same translation engine can also transform that translation into audio, and simulating the voice of the person, making that translation even more credible.

It was, without doubt, one of the most striking features of the artificial intelligence engine of the Snapdragon 865, the brain of the next cell phones in 2020. Among the manufacturers that use it will surely be the leader, Samsung, and other brands have already confirmed that they will use it , such as Xiaomi, Oppo (both Chinese companies that rank in the top 10 of the most sold in the world) or Motorola.

Simultaneous translation without internet

The system technically works as follows: the artificial intelligence engine first passes the voice from analog to digital; Then, from voice to text. Ah detects that it is English, for example. Then translate into Chinese (or Spanish, or Portuguese, etc.). The fourth layer will be the one of transmission to the interlocutor, in the same tone in which the message was emitted.

The most important thing is that this type of translation does not require an Internet connection, as it happens in some systems that already exist (such as Pixel Buds or Google Home). But, unlike the others, which work in the cloud (and cause delays in communication) this language module must be downloaded to the phone so that it can work. According to the demo, there are already several languages ??and among them is Spanish. It is supported by one of the novelties of Android 10, which ensures that all voice recognition software is hosted on the phone and does not require a link to a remote server.

The next year will be the moment of implementation. Be available for those manufacturers that have the Snapdragon 865 among their models. "It is the first implementation that allows the translation of conversations in real time into complicated networks," explained Qualcomm, who made this development with a Chinese partner, called Youdao, who already has some apps for language learning.
