The perfect application to make your Android tablet a notebook

Far are the days where tablets could only be used as if they were large mobiles with no ability to call. Advances in technology have made them improve to the point of completely changing the way they are used. For example now we can use a tablet as if it were a notebook. And for that, if you use Android, the best is Squid.

Squid is a notebook application for Android that focuses on being able to offer the experience of a notebook on your Tablet. Although it is compatible even with mobile phones, it is best to have a tablet with pen holder digital like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 or the Huawei MediaPad M10 Pro.

Replace your heavy notebooks or folders

The application allows both create notes pages and open PDFs to write in them. Both contents are treated as notes by the application. These can be organized in notebooks, essential to carry an order but very visual because they are hidden in the side menu.

Squid is free, but you need a monthly or annual subscription to unlock extra features.

When opening the application, the first thing we see is the last edited notes, regardless of the notebook. This makes it very fast to resume With the last thing you were doing. Something slower is to look for something in a notebook, because you have to take out the side menu (which can be done by gesture help), select the notebook and look for the note. It could be worse.

The application is free, although it includes some functions premium that will require you to subscribe paying 1 euro per month or 10 euros a year. The import of PDFs is one of the payment features but if you don't want to subscribe you can buy this functionality for 5.49 euros forever.

After using the application on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 I would highly recommend the subscription to use this application.

The application has payment functions, but it is still cheaper than buying notebooks, folios, pens …

Notes, schemes, the strategy of your team or your great score

We will start by analyzing the application more thoroughly by the blank notes. We will leave the PDFs for more advance. These are made up of sheets, whose size you can define among a multitude of standards such as A4, US 4 × 6, B5, Letter … These sizes are ideal for printing a posteriori our notes, but we can use an infinitely long sheet to write without the hassle of changing pages.

With paper backgrounds you can place from lines and grids to soccer fields and scores.

Notes can be created with paper background empty or the one you select from a wide variety of templates. Most of them are premium and they range from some standards such as lines or Cornell to logarithmic, sheet music or basketball courts. Of course, only the plain background can be changed in color and some have a unique size.

Once inside our note, as in the PDFs, we have the following tools at our disposal:

  • Pen: the basic tool, with a rounded tip and pressure sensitive digital pens. You can turn off the pressure and change the color between millions. Configurable in size.
  • Marker: Flat tip, configurable in size, color and transparency.
  • Eraser: Allows you to erase entire paths by simply touching them or just what is under the pen. The size can be adjusted.
  • Selector: allows you to select things already written / drawn around them. Then you can do the following with them:
    • Change the color and thickness.
    • Copy and cut.
    • Remove.
  • Shapes: insert a line, square or circle with an edge of adjustable width and the size we draw from corner to corner.
  • Text: to enter text written with the keyboard. Some keyboards like Samsung's allow handwriting.
  • Insert image: allows you to add an image of the device or take one with the cameras of this.
  • Change page: There are no gestures available to go to the previous or next page. You must click on the back or next buttons and if you click on the page number you can see all thumbnails.

Something more hidden, in the three-point menu, we have some more options under "Page Actions":

  • Select all.
  • Delete page: Empty the page completely.
  • Insert page: add a page It can also be done without accessing the menu by clicking on the next page when you reach the last one.
  • Insert PDF: Add a PDF (in pages) before or after the page you are on.
  • Delete page: Remove the application page.

Time to leave your hand writing

You just have to press on the floating button with a «+» and select «Default note» to start writing, drawing, composing or whatever you want. If you want a different kind of paper this time than you have indicated in default settings You have the "Note" button that lets you select the type of paper before creating a note.
