The Xiaomi Mi 9 is the secret weapon of the Chinese company to compete with the most important cell phones of the season in the high-end category.
The company does it for everything great, with a device that has a very competitive price and great features that can make you choose this phone over the(or consequently, of ), he or the .
This company has been growing by leaps and bounds, and although it is not yet officially available in the United States, many of its cell phones arrive in Mexico and other countries in Latin America, such as Europe and in particular Spain, where Xiaomi is It has become very popular.
I have been using this Xiaomi cell phone for two weeks – which includes the MIUI company interface itself -, and I will tell you my experience.

Price and availability
The Xiaomi Mi 9 is priced at 449 euros in Spain for the 6GB version of RAM and 64GB of storage and 499 euros for the 128GB version of storage. In Mexico its price is 12,999 pesos for the version with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The cell phone is sold in some online stores in the United States, but not directly by the company.
Design: less bezels and no headphone port
The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a beautiful, but easy to dirty, rear glass, which this time incorporates a new triple camera that stands out quite a lot. When you have the phone in your hand, its edges feel like a continuity of the device, something that allows a good grip.
The phone has slightly curved sides, which end in aluminum edges, a detail that literally resembles the Mi 8 and other cell phones of the company. This device is slightly slippery when you have it in your hand, although not as much as other phones we have tried, such as the LG G8 ThinQ.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a double output for the horn and a USB Type C charging port. Unfortunately, this phone does not have a headphone port, and although it does not have a physical fingerprint sensor, it does have one on the screen.
If we talk about physical buttons, it keeps the volume and the power button on the right side, and a button dedicated to Google Assistant on the left side. This last button can be configured with other predefined actions, such as opening Google Search, opening the front camera, a recent app or turning on the flash to use it as a flashlight.
With a 6.39-inch screen, the Xiaomi Mi 9 is slightly smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus or the iPhone XS Max and larger than the Huawei P30 and similar to the One Plus 6T, which are some of its direct rivals.
On the front, we find a screen with few bezels, which only has the camera in the form of a drop at the top, which allows you to have more space on the panel for a better visualization of the content in general.
As you can see in these photos that we leave below, the Mi 9 comes in a transparent version, although this is not sold in all the markets in which it is available.
Xiaomi Mi 9 performance
The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a Snapdragon 855 processor, just like the Galaxy S10 and other cell phones of the season. In my tests, the performance of the cell phone has been fluid and I had no problems playing, sending messages and in general performing the routine tasks to which we are accustomed.
I have not noticed at any time that the device feels slow and when I have kept games of Asphalt 9 I haven't felt it warm up either. Its fluency has been positive, I have not found that the apps open more slowly – something that happened to me with the Huawei P Smart 2019 – nor that the phone had failures when I executed multitasking.
As compared to other recent cell phones:
On-screen fingerprint sensor
The Xiaomi Mi 9 includes a fingerprint sensor on the screen, something new for this range of cell phones of the brand. The company says that placing it in this place and removing it from the rear has gained 25 percent speed in unlocking.
Although we are not lovers of the fingerprint sensor on the screen, because the physical works well and is safe, the truth is that the one that Xiaomi incorporates is fast and effective. Lightly press the screen and voila. In my tests it has not given me errors or identification failures as it happened to other cell phones. Although, yes, this optical sensor never allows you to unlock the cell phone with wet or dirty hands.
By the way, the company says that the sensor is not a problem if you suffer from dry hands or if there is a very bright light influencing the screen. Although if you have wet or wet, of course, it will not work quite well, as in others such as the Huawei P30 Pro or the OnePlus 6T.
This sensor works to me slightly better than the OnePlus 6T, because it feels faster, although in general the experience of placing the finger and waiting for the reaction is similar in many cell phones with optical sensor. However, the Huawei P30 Pro has been slightly faster, in my experience.
This cell phone also has facial recognition, but since it does not incorporate specialized camera technology, it is not the safest method recommended by the company.
The battery as always is an aspect that we consider when assessing a cell phone. You should take into consideration that this phone offers good behavior, and that despite its price, it performs very well and competes with the best.
