A recent patent has emerged with the design of a cartridge.
Of all the patents Sony has secured over the years, the latter may be the strangest, especially with the PlayStation 5 that will come out next year. According to LetsGoDigital, Sony has filed a patent for a PlayStation cartridge. Sony's senior art director, Yujin Morisawa, is the cartridge design.
You can check the design of the cartridge here. The obvious assumption is that Sony may be using this as a new media format for the PS5. It seems unlikely since a Blu-ray 4K is already confirmed for the console. It is also unlikely that this is the format for a new PlayStation device as a new handheld.
At this point, we can assume that Sony is patenting this technology for something in the future, even if the infrastructure for that does not exist. Sounds strange, but the company has patented things like digital exchanges and gifts, which do not yet exist on the PlayStation Store. We will have to wait and see how this last invention is developed.
The launch of PlayStation 5 is scheduled for the Holiday 2020 season.
