Google finally implements RCS support for Android messages

android 9 foot review review highlight text 700x467 cThe world of text messages is about to change. More than forty telephone operators and manufacturers are working together to bring the new RCS messaging system to users globally, providing a new generation platform that has radical improvements to communicate via text messages. And Google wants to be at the forefront.

In effect, the RCS messenger protocol (Rich Communication Services) finally arrived, at least for Android users. Google has announced that launching RCS as the main platform for text messages for anyone using the Android Messages application.

There is no doubt that RCS is a breakthrough for Google, and it is largely seen as the way in which you can better compete with Apple's iMessage. This is due to the fact that it is essentially a next-generation text message platform, which allows functions found in iMessage, such as read receipts, better group message support, advanced multimedia support and a number of new functions.

“To make your conversations more fluid, we have worked on updating traditional SMS text messages with more useful chat functions, with RCS technology. When you and your friends send messages with these functions, they can chat via Wi-Fi or mobile data, send and receive high-resolution photos and videos, and see if people have received their latest messages, ”Google explained in a statement.

However, there is a big disadvantage compared to iMessage: Apple's service is encrypted end to end (end to end encryption), while Google's does not have this security measure. Based on this, Google promises to only store messages that are in transit, and not save them later, but you should take into account that it may still be possible for others to intercept or read them. Because of that, those interested in privacy will want to continue with other services, such as WhatsApp or iMessage.

Essentially, RCS aims to take SMS messages and update them at the level of interactive chat systems, with useful features found in applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and WebChat.

The SMS message system has long been seen as an outdated platform, as it was introduced in the early 1990s. Without an important update since that time, users have been caught with restrictions as obsolete as the MMS messenger, messages with no more than 160 characters, and other limits. RCS messages will change these restrictions and add other useful functions.

To take advantage of the new service, you just have to make sure that Android Messages is the default text message application on your phone. Many Android phones come with that default app, but some manufacturers, such as Samsung, include their own messenger applications. In that case, if you want to use RCS, you should go to the Google Play Store and download Android Messages for yourself.

Initially, Google’s big push for RCS seemed to be business-oriented, with the company trying to push that particular angle and highlighting the ways in which companies can use RCS features to bring their products to customers, which would even allow them Buy and process orders through a messenger application. With the availability to the public in general, it is expected that the other messenger platforms should quickly catch up.
