How to downgrade to Apple TV with tvOS beta

If it turns out that you are one of those who installed the beta version of tvOS on your Apple TV, and now you are desperate to have Netflix or Amazon Prime again, or to solve certain problems with your device, you should know that it is still possible to make a downgrade to return to the previous version of tvOS 11.

As you know, do downgrade Apple devices is nothing new and allows you to recover an earlier version of the operating system for your device in order to solve certain problems of instability or incompatibility. Here we show you how to do it.

How to downgrade an Apple TV 4 from tvOS beta

This method will only work if you are using an Apple TV 4 edition (if it is an Apple TV 4K the procedure is somewhat different since it does not have a USB C port, but we will also show you how it is possible to do it).

  1. Access the file download page IPSW and choose the Apple TV.
  2. Select Apple TV 4 (if you have an Apple TV 4K, it does not apply).
  3. Find the latest version of tvOS you want it to work with. It must be a signed version; If it is not signed, you will not be able to obtain it.
  4. Click on the version you want.
  5. Then click on the Download tab to download the firmware.
  6. Now, turn on the Apple TV and connect it to your computer via USB C cable.
  7. Open iTunes
  8. Wait for iTunes to detect your Apple TV.
  9. Once it is recognized, choose Restore Apple TV while holding down the Alt / Option key (or Shift if you are using a Windows PC).
  10. A pop-up window will appear and you can click on the firmware IPSW and choose Open.
  11. Confirm that you want to move the firmware to iTunes.
  12. Finally, click Restore.

How to downgrade an Apple TV 4K from tvOS beta

Because the Apple TV 4K does not have a USB C port, you cannot do the downgrade following the instructions above using the use of a Mac or PC. Fortunately, it is possible to do it by resetting it, but we explain what you should do before.

  1. First, you must cancel the registration of your Apple TV from the Apple beta program. To do this, on your Apple TV, click Settings> System> Software update.
  2. Click Get beta updates (or Get public beta updates) to disable that feature.
  3. If you want to leave the beta program completely, you can click on the link the bottom of the page. (You may need to log in with the Apple ID and the password you are using for the beta program before you can do so.)
  4. Now go to Settings> System> Reset.
  5. Click Reset.
  6. Wait for your Apple TV to restart. Your Apple TV 4K should be reset to factory settings.
