Asus FonePad, a 7-inch Tablet, phone calls and Intel heart

Asus are characterized by innovating in their products: they have a wide range of products behind them such as the Asus Transformer or Padfone (which by the way, today they have presented the Padfone Infinity, which I recommend you take a look at). Today was no exception, and under the framework of MWC 2013 they have decided to introduce us to something new

Today they have decided to surprise with a product that, although it looks like what they have already presented before, differs completely from what they had already accustomed us. Other manufacturers had already done it before, however, although it remains to be seen if Asus succeeds.

What we present today is the Asus FonePad (not PadFone, although they have spent a lot of originality to choose the name), a 7-inch tablet that has the ability to make phone calls, a feature that is increasingly imposed on the market and this is demonstrated by the launches of the manufacturers.

The technical characteristics of the Asus FonePad are as follows, and are not exactly discrete:

  • Screen of 7 inches with a resolution of 1280 √ó 800 pixels
  • Intel Atom Z2420 (dual-core at 1.2GHz e Hyperthreading)
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8 / 16GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD
  • 1.2MP front camera and optional 3MP rear camera
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 4,270mAh battery
  • 340 grams approximately

The most remarkable thing to start with is the Intel's choice over Snapdragon or Tegra, to give several examples. We should see if it has the performance we expect or falls short. On the other hand we find the ability to use calls (in addition to SMS and mobile data, as usual) via mobile networks, which has been a big enough incentive to forget our phone at home

Regarding availability and prices, it is expected to be available from March on a price of ‚ā¨ 219 in Europe, without confirmed availability beyond the old continent. With this price a fairly powerful competitor of the current Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire emerges, the two exponents in the 7-inch Tablets, and a server believes that it will give a lot of war to the two Tablets mentioned above. We hope to have more details of this Tablet in the coming days, so keep an eye on it;)
