The best phones under US $ 500

Josh Miller / CNET

In an era when phones like the iPhone XS Max and the Samsung Galaxy Fold cost between $ 1,000 and $ 2,000, it is easy to feel that the phones are becoming more and more expensive and more removed from the reach of our budget. But do not worry. There are many phones that are fast, take great pictures and offer modern software features that won't break your pocket. This does not mean, of course, that such cell phones are obsolete, since most have first-class processors and good cameras.

For less than US $ 200 and with frequent discounts, the Motorola Moto G7 Play is one of our favorite economic phones. The Moto G7 Play and the Moto G7, which is a bit more expensive, share the same processor and the same water resistance. But the G7 Play has a smaller 5.7-inch screen and a 13-megapixel camera. For those who like to take many selfies, find a flash on the front of the phone.

The Motorola Moto G7 may not be as cheap as the G7 Play, but at $ 299 it is still a good buy. Although its unique horn does not offer the best sound and takes bad photos and bad videos in low light conditions, the Moto G7 has a double rear camera, a long-lasting battery and an elegant design. It also loads quickly.

Although the LG G7 has a button to invoke Google Assistant that cannot be configured for something else, there are many other reasons to like this phone. It has a camera with artificial intelligence that optimizes your photos before you capture the image, a wide-angle secondary camera and traditional input for headphones.

The new Pixel 3A of 2019 gets rid of some functions that were in the Pixel 3 of 2018: it is not waterproof, it has no wireless charge and its maximum storage is 64GB. But, add a traditional headphone jack and keep the excellent Night Sight camera that can take great pictures in the dark. The photos captured during the day also look great. It is compatible with most telephone operators in the United States.

It's been two years since the Galaxy S8 was launched, but it's still a phone worth considering. It is waterproof, has wireless charging, storage expansion and traditional headphone input. In addition, its curved screen gives the phone a modern look.
