Not content to own one of the fashion applications, with 500 million monthly active users worldwide, the company that owns TikTok is working on the development of its own smart phone.
According to a Financial Times report, ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, is preparing to launch its own mobile phone. The company also owns the Jinri Toutiao news application; a Chinese version of TikTok called Douyin and an instant messenger app, Flipchat.
The source source bases its report on the testimonies of two people familiar with the project and ensures that the company's plan is to launch a cell phone with bloatware (applications that are preinstalled on the phone) of the company, to differentiate itself from the competition.
According to the report, for the development of the phone Bytedance will be working in collaboration with Smartisan, a Chinese manufacturer of telephones and other electronic devices, and even have already acquired some of the manufacturer's patents.
At the moment there are no release dates, nor specific specifications on the device, but the FT says that the company will focus the sales of this mobile in China and is not expected to be extended to other territories.
It is not the first time that a company tries to take advantage of the pull of an application to create hardware around an application. Facebook tried to launch its own cell phone in 2012 and even hired several of the engineers involved in iPhone development, but the project never came to light.
