Facebook is increasing its new strict restrictions on political advertising.
A year after the company introduced its tools to increase "transparency" around political announcements in the United States, Facebook is expanding those rules around the world.
Under the new policy, advertisers who buy ads related to elections or other political "problems" should verify their identity on Facebook Y Reveal who paid for the ad.
These ads, and the identity of their buyers, are kept in the Facebook Ad Library for seven years, so anyone can see who paid for a particular ad.
This is part of the widespread effort of Facebook
After Russia's activity before the 2016 presidential elections in the United States, to protect the elections from foreign interference.
Facebook has already been expanding some of these tools outside the United States, but now it is making them more available. The company is also increasing policy enforcement, starting with countries that have important elections to come.
"As of today, we will systematically detect and review the ads in Ukraine and Canada through a combination of automatic and human review," Facebook product manager Sarah Schiff wrote in a statement.
“In Singapore and Argentina, we will begin to enforce the law within the next few months. If we are aware of an advertisement that violates a law, we will act quickly to eliminate it. With these tools, regulators are now better positioned to consider how to protect elections with reasonable regulations, for which they are specially designed to do so. ”
Facebook's political advertising policies
They have received some criticism from groups that believe the rules are too broad, publishers initially complained that the ads that promote the news should be exempt from the requirements (Facebook finally agreed), the social network says that the Rules are intended to combat the type of electoral interference Russia used, with great effect, in the 2016 presidential election.
