Review of Realme 5 Pro: high-end phone at an affordable price
"A phone well above other mid-range, with a versatile camera and an autonomous and fast load of the best in this segment and price."
Versatile and decent camera
Autonomous to spare
Remarkable fast charge
Very original finish
Slightly outdated appearance
It is not waterproof
It is not sold in the United States or Latin America
With only a year and a half of life and after devastating sales in India and other Asian countries, the Chinese manufacturer Realme, belonging to the giant BBK Electronics, landed on the European market in October 2019 to conquer users with very competitive phones. What makes this phone stand out? Is it worth buying? Reach more passes?
A very original holographic finish
The Realme 5 Pro phone comes with a 6.3-inch (2,340 1,080) screen only occupied by a discrete notch or notch in the form of a drop that houses the chamber of selfies. In size and thickness it is not one of the least bulky, but it is thick and not at all stylized, but neither does it feel heavy in the hand. In the back, plastic that mimics glass, you can boast a finish with a bright and changing holographic design (depending on the incidence of light) of the most original we have seen, although the fingerprint reader located above in the center It gives it an old fashioned aesthetic.
In the phone that we have borrowed for our tests, the CE mark and the symbol of not throwing the conventional garbage together with a text are printed in gold, which is very ugly all stamped ah. Fortunately, you will not find it when you buy this phone, you can rest assured, according to the manufacturer.
As usual in this type of glossy finishes, fingerprints dirty this area instantly. The good thing is that when you buy it a transparent gel case is included to protect the phone as soon as you take it out of the box.
On the bottom edge, it includes the USB C port, a speaker and the connector Jack 3.5 mm for headphones or headphones. The power button is on the right side, while the volume up and down are on the left.
To unlock the phone you can use the classic or biometric parameters, such as the fingerprint or the face. In both cases it works without problems, and the facial is fast.
A cudruple camera with everything you need
The manufacturer Realme has opted for cudruple cameras in all phones. In the case of the 5 Pro model with a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor (the same as the Xiaomi Mi 9, the Honor View 20 and the Huawei Nova 4), a 119-degree wide-angle 8 megapixel lens (aperture f / 2.25) , another for portraits of 2 megapixels and a fourth for macro photography with 2 megapixels that allows a shooting distance of 4 cm.
As is now imposed on mid-range cell phones, it incorporates a night landscape mode that can also be activated in portrait mode but not in selfies In our tests, the camera in this mode has behaved decently, without illuminating the scene excessively. You will not find a powerful zoom, but a digital one of ten magnifications. Do not photograph with 48 megapixels by default, you will have to activate this mode in the options.
one from 8
In this model the wide-angle lens is not activated on the phone screen, but from an icon that is on the left side, a place that is comfortable but not as much as if you have it right on the screen. On the same side are the icons of flash, HDR, color enhancement, filters and the camera options menu (timer, identification by artificial intelligence, fingerprint shooting).
The front camera incorporates 16 megapixels and different editing resources to make touch-ups as if it were an operation of aesthetic surgery: the thinnest or smallest face, touch up the skunk, enlarge the eyes or reduce the nose, among others.
In video mode, it records in 4K and has time-lapse and slow motion and it is possible to edit the recordings, with music, special effects, default filters and texts, as well as putting a watermark.
Specifications that other mid-range would like
If you are looking for gaming power, the Realme 5 Pro model operates with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 AIE (Artificial Intelligence engine). It is not the most advanced in its range but should be more than enough for an average user. This chip is complemented with a RAM of 8 GB, a feature until now aimed at the high-end and that begins to be seen on average. This allows you to work simultaneously with several open applications without problems and enjoy games fluently.
Like many other mid-range phones, Realme 5 Pro integrates 128 GB of storage, which can be expanded with memory cards up to 256 GB. You do not lack space to accumulate endless photos, videos and music.
In half an hour, charge half the battery
If you are looking for a mobile that lasts two days with normal use, not intensive with video or games, this model must satisfy this requirement for its capacity of 4,035 mAh. In our tests at least that is how he has behaved. But when your battery runs out, you won't be long without being able to use it: Realme 5 Pro integrates fast charging with 20 W Vooc technology. We've put it to charge at 10 percent battery and it only took 26 minutes to reach 50 percent of capacity. About an hour later, it had been filled completely.
The personality of ColorOS 6
The phone comes with Google applications and many other preinstalled ones that may be useful depending on your customs and preferences. Bring an FM radio, voice recorder, Facebook, Opera browser and AquaMail app to manage email, among others. If you do not need an app, click on the icon and then delete and uninstall.
The customization layer of the Android 9 operating system, ColorOS 6 (the same as Oppo phones), incorporates very useful functions such as Clone (that is, copying the data from the old phone to it when you release it, including photos, contacts and applications), a file manager or a game space that optimizes the use of video games.
When it comes to the camera, do not expect the photos of the level of a Huawei P30 Pro, but considering its price the result is more than satisfactory. We were very pleasantly surprised by its fast charge that can get you out of trouble just by plugging it in for half an hour. Although it will take a while to load it: the autonomy of the battery gives enough time, although everything depends on the use.
On an aesthetic level, we have loved its holographic finish although it stands out much less with the gel case on. The design is its weakest section, without that meaning that it is ugly, just somewhat outdated (the fingerprint reader already seems it to us in a mobile phone). Being thick gives it strength (it has dropped twice and has left intact) but it looks a bit bulky. If you are looking for an elegant cell phone, this is not for you. This model only endures splashes, something is something. If it were resistant to water and dust, a feature that we value very much will be perfect.
The model with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage costs 249 euros, while the 4 GB model and 128 GB of storage you can get it at 199 euros. Unfortunately, it is only available in Europe and our readers in the US and Latin America cannot buy it.
Tremble mid-range rivals with a similar price or even above, such as Motorola One Vision, Xiaomi Mi 9T, or Galaxy A50, among many others. The new Chinese competitor Realme has been very strong and, if it continues with the same strategy, it is sure that it will soon be in the top sales positions. Time to time.
