With a mid-range increasingly blurred and with more competitors, Huawei launches the Nova 5T this review with the aim of making a hole in one of the last devices of the Chinese brand with Google?s entire ecosystem in your entrails
One of the competitors we are referring to is Realme, which landed in Spain makes few dates with Realme 5 Pro, a terminal with great specifications at a ridiculous price.
The one that competes directly with the Huawei Nova 5T of this review is the Realme X2 Pro, which poses a hardware at a price difficult to understand (low), with common details between both rivals, such as the four rear cameras.
Really not a high end?
In this section the first thing that stands out is what solid that looks like construction of the Huawei Nova 5T. Rather it could be that of a high range with the structure very well finished and giving the sensation of having climbed a couple of steps with respect to similar ranges of the last generation.
The second is the photographic section represented with four rear cameras. In this case, it also follows the current fashion of making the lens assembly stand out on the back of the smartphone.
This gives a premium look (to call it somehow) but we run into the objective fragility of having an edge that will act as a landing gear.
Something very similar to what we see in devices such as the OnePlus 7T Pro and that force us to acquire a case or protector. Huawei says that a protective TPU plastic case is included in the case, but the truth is that it was not in our unit.
Entering aesthetic matters, we highlight a front occupied almost entirely by the screen (which we will talk about later) and a very elegant black back in our unit, although there are much more fun in blue or purple:
Another aspect to highlight is the location of the fingerprint reader. In this case we do not have it on the front, or under the screen, or on the back, but we will find it as a thin band in the right song.
The operation is surprisingly good. Much better than the user experience that offers solutions such as the optical sensor located under the screen and very similar to the last generations of fingerprint readers on the back such as the Google Pixel 3 XL.
In this case, apart from fingerprint sensor, it is also the lock and unlock button, which is accompanied by the keypad dedicated to volume up and down.
The upper and left edges are clean and we will have to go to the bottom to find the USB Type-C connector, microphone, speaker and SIM card tray. No trace of 3.5mm minijack, but we're glad they came headphones and an adapter (from USB Type C to minijack) inside the box.
Huawei Nova 5T, technical sheet

The same processor as the P30 Pro
In the entrails of the Nova 5T we find the Kirin 980 processor, with eight cores and 7 nm, that we can also find in the Huawei P30 Pro and that has not been relieved until the launch of the Kirin 990 with the Mate 30 Pro.
As for memory, we find a couple of combinations composed of 6 GB of RAM with 128 GB internal storage and 8 GB of RAM with 128 GB of storage.
He performance, as we can imagine seeing the specifications, it is more like the of a high range than one on average. Huawei's commitment to manufacture its own processors and thus have absolute control of the hardware that mount their phones of course that has worked out well.
This processor includes a Dual NPU that provide the artificial intelligence so that the performance of our Nova 5 T is better while applying efficiency algorithms for battery saving.
We could not resist trying it with the latest fashion games like Call of Duty Mobile and the result has been top notch.
We have not experienced annoying lags in heavy tasks and much less in everyday ones such as social networks, messaging, photography or to consume videos or streaming music.
EMUI 9 and Android 9, with Google apps
Huawei implements Android 9 along with its EMUI 9 layer, although according to the company itself it may be updated soon to EMUI 10. We have already talked long and hard about the peculiar vision that the Chinese brand has of an operating system and we have even compared EMUI with MIUI, direct rival of the hand of Xiaomi.
EMUI is one of these layers of customization that recharge the terminal a lot. If we want to have an application preinstalled for (almost) everything will be very good choice. This leads us directly to talk about bloatware.
And is that Huawei installs its own apps that practically we will never open them. Many of them can be uninstalled, but not others, and even worse, we also have the entire Google application cart.
Leaving the above aside, the User experience offered by EMUI is quite good. We would have liked to have Android 10 made with EMUI 10, but we know that Huawei has already certified this smartphone before, thus avoiding the US embargo.
We have some additions such as the ability to duplicate applications, a very good calendar app, another email that is not lagging behind and many customization options: from enabling or disabling an application drawer to completely changing the appearance of the Nova 5T through its Themes app.
Four rear cameras and a hole in front
One of the pillars on which Huawei has based the marketing strategy of the Nova 5T has been the photographic section. Just take a look at the back of the smartphone to realize the 4 cameras it houses:
- Main camera: 48 megapixel sensor f / 1.8 and autofocus, be responsible for making day and night shots.
- Wide angle: 16 megapixels and f / 2.2 (we do not know the viewing angle).
- Depth sensor: 2 megapixels.
- Macro lens: 2 megapixels.
We were pleasantly surprised by the main lens, the 48 megapixels are already a standard in the industry and get good results.
Also when the light is low, although it does not reach an aperture f / 1.6 (which is already beginning to be seen in terminals such as the OnePlus 7T), it has a night mode that can make us get out of the way and stay airy.
Artificial intelligence helps a lot, Huawei is one of the specialists in this aspect and, as the generations go by, they refine their behavior.
The camera for wide angle shots also has good performance. Of course, we do not ask for excellent results in night environments.
In this letter of rear cameras we can talk about the lens for taking pictures at a very short distance. With a little patience and good light you can get interesting things with this macro function with a dedicated camera.
And finally, we have the front camera. Composed of a lens of 32 megapixels f / 2.0 and with some very good results.
When there is low light illuminate the white screen to make flash and pick our face perfectly. Artificial intelligence also helps in this case.
Good IPS screen and no stereo audio
We now address the most visual aspect of the Nova 5T, which is composed of a 6.26 inch screen diagonally and perforated by the front chamber in the upper left. A design that reminds us a lot of Honor View 20 and that seems a success.
As for the technical section, we find a IPS LCD panel of very good quality with a FullHD + resolution (2,340 x 1080 pixels) to be more than enough to enjoy any multimedia content on the smartphone.
According to our taste, we can change the hue of the colors by making them colder or cooler and even allows us to reduce scale the screen resolution to HD + To save battery.
The brightness is also correct and we thank the fingerprint reader on the side, because we will not receive the traditional flashes of the optical readers under the screen.
As for the audio, we find a single speaker in the lower edge. The volume and clarity of the sound emitted are good and, although it has no great pretensions, serve to complete the multimedia experience.
Quick charge to power
With increasingly thin smartphones it is difficult to mount batteries that exceed 4,000 mAh. This figure has been considered as the battery capacity that guarantees us to have energy for the whole day, even if we are advanced and demanding users.
The Huawei Nova 5T stays in about nothing negligible 3,750 mAh, that will not put us in too much trouble if our main activity of the day is to play mobile video games.
In the tests we have done, we get to sleep with a 30% load on average after about 16 hours listening to podcasts, reading news, surfing the Internet, open social media bar, messenger, some short calls and specific photos.
But if we believe that the battery is going to fall short, Huawei has implemented a system of fast charge with the charger included in the box (to take note Apple with the iPhone 11) and to be able to fill the battery 0 to 100% in just over an hour.
No worries about Trump
With all the buzz with Huawei between the United States and China, many users have asked us about the availability of Google applications in this Huawei Nova 5T. As we mentioned earlier, this smartphone has been certified for a few months and has Guaranteed all Google services and applications.
In Europe, Huawei (and the rest of the brands) depends a lot on the entire ecosystem that Google provides to manufacturers. From the service of notifications to payments, through the virtual assistant or the wide range of background services that some applications need to work.
Once clarified this and having tried the Huawei Nova 5T, it seems a excellent midrange with a technical sheet that could well be that of a high range and a really attractive price of 429 euros.
