Season 3 of Stranger Thingsit premieres on July 4 on Netflix, and it's easy to get excited about the return of the guys from Hawkins, Indiana, and seeing them face a new threat of that nightmare dimension known as Upside Down. It has been much more than a year since the second season they are in this streaming service, and that is why we think you may be craving a summary of Stranger Things in what you prepare for the arrival of the next episode package. So feel comfortable, keep reading and catch up. (Eye: there are many spoilers but that shouldn't surprise you).
Over the course of this eight episode season, we learned that some scientists at the Hawkins National Laboratory accidentally released a strange and lethal creature while trying to open a portal to another dimension. The terrifying creature kidnapped Will Byers, 12, and a local teenager, Barbara Barb Holland, and took them to her size.
Will's friends and family discovered what had happened to them with the help of Eleven, a girl with powerful telekinetic and teleptic capabilities derived from a secret government experiment called Project MKUltra. Eleven revealed that she escaped from the laboratory and her main scientific manipulator, Dr. Martin Brenner, after being forced to use her abilities to open the dimensional crack that led the creature to Hawkins.
Will was rescued by his mother, Joyce Byers, and the head of the local police department, Jim Hopper, who risked entering Upside Down to bring him back home. His mission was assisted by Will's best friends, Lucas Sinclair, Mike Wheeler and Dustin Henderson, who discovered a way to amplify Eleven's powers and use them to locate his friend. Meanwhile, Will's older brother Jonathan Byers, along with his high school classmates Nancy Wheeler (Mike's older sister) and Steve Harrington, set the creature up, which Will's friends, game lovers Dungeons & Dragons, they baptized as The Demogorgon.
Caught in the local high school with the Demogorgon and a group of government agents determined to take Eleven back to the lab, Will's friends manage to evade both threats for long enough for Eleven to use his powers to repel the agents and destroy the Demogorgon In the resulting psychic explosion, Eleven disappears, along with the creature.
After his encounter with the Demogorgon, Will meets with his family and friends, Jim is led by mysterious agents and Nancy turns on his fledgling romance with Steve. However, what Will did not reveal is that after leaving Upside Down he began to have visions of another monstrous entity and spit strange slug creatures.
Some new characters that arrived with the second season were Max Mayfield, a girl who is involved in the adventures of Will and his friends, and his abusive and ruthless older half brother, Billy Hargrove. The new scientist in charge of the Hawkins Laboratory, Dr. Sam Owens, also appears this season, in addition to Joyce's boyfriend, Bob Newby (played to the delight of almost everyone by Samwise / Rudy himself: Sean Astin).
A year after what happened in the first season, Will's friends and family discovered that the huge body with tentacles that he saw in recurring visions named Mind Flayer by the boys had infected him while he was on Upside Down. They also learned that a kind of tentacle creeper grew under Hawkins, extending from the crack (still open) between the Upside Down and its own dimension and allowing more creatures to pass.
Having disappeared in the Upside Down at the end of the first season, Eleven used his powers to find a way back to Hawkins, where Hopper kept her hidden and safe. Later he learns that there was another Kali girl who had obtained powers with the MKUltra Project, and embarked on a trip to Chicago to meet her and train with her.
Meanwhile in Hawkins, it was revealed that the slimy creature that Will spit in season 1 was a young Demogorgon, and worse yet: he wasn't the only one in town.
The Demogorgons besieged the Hawkins Laboratory when Joyce and Dr. Owens tried to remove the influence of the Mind Flayer on Will, and almost the entire cast was forced to fight to take Will to a safe place. Bob had to sacrifice himself to be able to get everyone safe, in one of the most prominent deaths of the season.
Finally, Mind Flayer was expelled from Will's body using extreme heat, Eleven met everyone in Hawkins and Steve went into the tunnels with Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Max, his new ally, to get the Demogorgons away from the lab. It was then that Jim and Eleven managed to close the crack under the laboratory, thanks to what Kali taught Eleven to do with his powers.
Once again, life began to return to normal in Hawkins, with the laboratory finally closed and with Jim being able to legally adopt Eleven as his daughter. The boys attended a school dance and everything looks good but, in the Upside Down, we saw the imposing upright Mind Flayer about the boys' school in the dark dimension.
What's next? We will have to wait a few days to find out.
