Cast Music (or any audio) from your Mac to Chromecast

Article Contents

Although I know it never happen due to the stormy relationship between Apple and Google, sometimes I would like to be able to launch iTunes or Apple Music from my Mac to Google Chromecast. When you don't have speakers to play your music, the TV is a great alternative to amplify your music.

Fortunately for us, Mac users, there is now an easy way to broadcast any audio from your device, thanks to developer Andres Gottlieb (who would also like to give credit to Nathan Wittstock, who developed the command line tool in which its application is based).

Step 1 Install the necessary applications

For this to work correctly, you will need two applications on your Mac. The first one is called Soundflower, with which you will not have to interact but it is necessary to allow «redirect the audio output of the system as an audio input of the system».

Download the zip file below, open the.dmg file and install the.pkg file. (If you cannot open the .pkg file because of your security preferences, you can change them or make an exception only once. See here for more help.)

The second is the application that we are going to use, Soundcast. Download the zip file, click and drag the Soundcast application to the Applications folder. (You may have to adjust your security preferences to open it too.)

Step 2 Play some Audio & Cast It

After starting the Soundcast application, you should see the icon in the mens bar. All you have to do now is play some audio and select "Start casting." The application will emit all the audio you are playing on the Mac, which means that you can emit any sound from the game and intensify the experience.

How to make it start at boot

Soundcast requires that you start it every time you restart your Mac, so if you are going to use it frequently, simply add it to the menu bar when booting. To do this, start by addressing your System Preferences and select Users and Groups.

Select the «Login Items» tab when you are in «Users & Groups». These are the applications and services that will start every time your Mac starts.

Now, there are two ways to add Soundcast to the list: you can drag and drop the application icon in the list, or touch the add sign and search for the application on your Mac.

After adding the application to your list of login items, be sure to check the box next to it. This will ensure that you never have to go looking for the application when you want to use it.

As announced, the application will broadcast any type of audio from your Mac, which includes multiple audio sources that you may be playing simultaneously. That means the system also sounds. The only thing that could be noted as negative is that the screen that remains in the Chromecast is not attractive and seems a bit unfinished.
