Arlo Pro vs. Arlo Pro 2 vs. Arlo Ultra: what camcorder to choose?

Arlo offers a robust security platform with a wide range of cameras for domestic use, which can be used individually or together, both inside and outside. We have taken a look and are impressed with several of their models, so the choice can be complex and, to help you, we wanted to make this comparison between Arlo Pro vs.. Arlo Pro 2 vs. Arlo Ultra

The habitual buyer of a product of this type does not usually have much patience when reading the specifications of the different cameras, so we will do this dirty work for you among the three of the most popular Arlo models: Arlo Pro, Arlo Pro 2 and Arlo Ultra.

All Arlo cameras have the same design and saving some variations, the cameras are difficult to differentiate from each other. They all have the same oval design, with similar accessories that can be screwed to walls or ceilings. All have rechargeable batteries and a compact design that facilitates placement in places with limited space. All of them are also weatherproof, so we do not find a clear winner in this section.

By pure camera power, the Arlo Ultra clearly wins, however, the other cameras have remarkable features as well.

The Arlo Pro has a 720p resolution camera with a range of 7.6 meters in the dark and a field of view of 130 degrees. It can be activated by movement or sound if it detects activity, although you can also view it live.

The Arlo Pro 2 increases the resolution to 1080p, maintaining the same night vision and field of view. It has motion and sound sensors, but allows you to adjust the sound detection levels more freely and choose up to three activity zones to detect it (unfortunately, most of these functions require a subscription to an Arlo Smart plan).

For its part, the Arlo Ultra has a 4k camera with a powerful digital zoom, automatic tracking, excellent color night vision and a 180 degree diagonal field of view.

Obviously, the Ultra enjoys a superior camera, although at a higher price. The highest level of detail can be particularly useful for companies, which have more arguments to capture high resolution images and zoom if necessary.

The three Arlo cameras come with built-in two-way audio, which means they have a microphone to listen to and a speaker to communicate if necessary. It also has sirens that sound more than 100 decibels and although they include a limited amount of integrated storage, they offer the possibility of connecting a USB drive or SD card to the camera to download the recordings.

Actually, the only significant difference between the functions is that the Ultra includes an integrated focus, something that the other models do not have. As we have pointed out, it is a more business-oriented feature.

All Arlo cameras can send alerts to your phone if they detect movement or sound, allowing you to connect to the camera remotely and observe or speak. Cameras save images recorded in the cloud for a certain number of days, allowing you to access them when necessary.

All three cameras are compatible with Alexa, so you can control them with voice commands when convenient (this works especially well in an Echo Show). Compatibility with Google Assistant is currently on the air due to the renewal of the service by Google, but it is possible that Assistant voice control will arrive in the future.

Finally, the Arlo Pro 2 is the only camera that supports platforms such as IFTTT and SmartThings, which makes it a tempting option for those with highly integrated smart homes.

Arlo's costs are divided into two sections: buy physical models and buy a subscription plan. As we mentioned earlier, cameras should include the hardware to which you can add a subscription that enables some additional functions and better storage: without a plan, Pro and Pro 2 retain recordings for 7 days. The Ultra model, on the other hand, comes with a free year of the Smart Premier plan, but after which, it can only save recordings of up to 3 days in a single camera.

Let's go now with the prices:

As you can see, the Arlo Pro 2 pack of two cameras has the most interesting difference. While not available on Amazon, the Arlo Pro 2 with a single camera is priced at $ 300 dollars, which gives you an idea of the volume of the discount.

When it comes to plans, you can choose between Arlo Smart or Arlo Smart Premiere. The Smart plan increases the transfer of images in the cloud to 30 days, so the videos stay much longer and adds AI detection and customizable activity zones for the sensors (not available on the Pro model). You also receive screen lock notifications, so alerts appear without needing to unlock your phone. This plan costs $ 3 per month per camera.

The Smart Premiere plan includes the above plus an online emergency call service that will help you get professional help when you need it. It costs $ 10 per month and covers up to 10 cameras (you can also opt for the Smart Elite plan, but it only expands cloud storage and is not very necessary). Again, there is a fairly clear line between home and business services.

If you need a more informal security configuration with only one or two cameras, we recommend the Arlo Pro 2. If you need a more elaborate or professional configuration with several cameras, the Arlo Ultra is probably the best option. Currently, there is not much justification for opting for the Arlo Pro.
