Windows 10 Remote Desktop How to enable it?

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) has been a feature of Windows since the days of XP Pro. It makes it easy to connect from one PC or device to another to recover files or provide PC support.

There are several free utilities out there that will allow you to configure a remote connection. Some of those that come to mind are join.me, TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop and are especially useful when connecting between different platforms.

But if you are in a pure Windows environment, here is a description of how to enable the RDP utility built into Windows 10.

Enable Remote Desktop for Windows 10 Pro

The RDP function is disabled by default, and to activate the remote function, type: remote configuration in the Cortana search box and select Allow remote access to your computer from the results at the top.

System properties open the Remote tab. From there, select Allow remote connections to this computer and keep the box checked Network level authentication for added security. Also, keep in mind that you must enable incoming remote connections on the PC you are connecting.

Remote on your PC

It has a couple of options as to how it connects remotely to the other computer. You can use the traditional desktop application or the universal Remote Desktop application.

  • Start the application and enter a name for the PC or device.
  • Your hostname or IP address, and select Connect.
  • Then enter the username and password used for the computer to which you are connecting. Also, if you are going to use the remote control often, check the box to remember your credentials.
