After Disney announced its plans to create its own streaming service to challenge Netflix, Hulu and others, we already know that it has an official name and is the Disney Plus (Disney +) streaming service. Disney president and general manager Bob Iger revealed the name of the service as he discusses how the company plans to compete with Netflix to date, the undisputed leader of the industry and the other streaaming platforms. Iger said that Disney + is the company's “highest priority” for 2019.
So, here you will find everything we know about the Disney + streaming service so far.
WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?
This streaming service feature several Disney studio movies like Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, and the live action remake of The Lion King You will also have exclusive transmission availability of Captain Marvel, becoming, in the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie not available on Netflix.
As if that were not enough, the outcome of Marvel's Infinity saga, Avengers: Endgame, just released in the cinema and that has been so successful in its debut, arrive on December 11 to this service, according to Disney's financial reports.
Approximately 7,000 television series chapters and between 400 and 500 films are expected to be available on the service when it is released.
However, compared to the biggest competitor of Disney Plus, Netflix, that's not much. According to a study carried out by the research firm Ampere Analysis, the total of Disney Plus television series only represent 16% of what Netflix offers. The Netflix movie library is also eight times larger than that of Disney Plus at its launch. In terms of absolute numbers, Disney Plus also falls short compared to Hulu, Amazon Prime, CBS All Access and HBO Go.
But what Disney Plus lacks in volume is not lacking in quality. Disney Plus be the exclusive home of some of the biggest and most popular movies, series and franchises. The first and most important among the contents will be the projects linked to the properties of Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Disney. In addition, the general theme of the service is familiar content.
In addition, those numbers will increase very rapidly. During the meeting of an investor, Iger said that all the movies in the Disney catalog will arrive at Disney Plus "sometime shortly after launch." That includes classic Disney animated movies, all of them. So, with Disney Plus, you can see favorites like Aladdin, The Lion Kingand many other titles.
However, Disney Plus not only be a collection of great successes. There will also be original content on the service. Recently, rumors were released that ensure that a new program based on The Muppets reach the magical hands of Disney Plus. Apparently, this production will be developed by actor Josh Gad and the creators of Habia una vez, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.
A report published in September indicated that Disney is developing multiple series of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, with the actors who played them on the big screen. According Variety, Loki and Scarlet Witch are two of the characters with programs in development, and Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, respectively, are expected to repeat their roles from the MCU films. Iger confirm the series Loki with Hiddleston during the earnings report in November 2018.
A live action series with MCU veterans Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie as Winter Soldier and Falcon, respectively, is also in the works with Empire Malcolm Spellman's writer.
Iger revealed that Disney Plus also includes content that is not owned by Disney, including National Geographic material, which it is in the process of acquiring through its planned purchase of 21st Century Fox and affiliated television companies. "Because the agreement with Fox an has not been closed, (…) and because we need to launch the service with a little volume, we are taking advantage of buying certain external products, which we will continue doing," said Iger.
The Mandalorian, the Star Wars series of live action previously announced and developed by Jon Favreau, is also among Disney + projects. In addition, the series Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Bring back actor Diego Luna as the rebel Spanish Cassian Andor.

But rumors suggest that Andor may not be the only popular Star Wars character who returns to Disney Plus. Due to the lackluster box office results of Single, Star Wars's "anthological" movie series are in "pause" mode, although Obi-Wan Kenobi's long-rumored movie could continue as a Disney Plus television series. Star Wars News Net reports that a six-episode Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries is "the next priority" on Disney Plus. It is not clear if Ewan McGregor appears in the series, or if the project is really being carried out, but Star Wars News Net has said that McGregor has been enthusiastic about putting on his Jedi clothes again, and that the script is also cool.
And Obi-Wan won't be the only series that will come to Disney Plus. We Got This Covered states that the series starring Star Wars characters such as Lando Calrissian, Qi’ra (the femme fatale of Solo), the reformed soldier and assault Finn and the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron are in an initial development at Disney. The report does not say whether Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Oscar Isaac or John Boyega all high-priced Hollywood stars at this time return to play their roles on the big screen, and Disney has not confirmed anything about it. For now, consider them as rumors, and nothing else.
A new series set in the world of Disney and Pixars Monsters. Inc. is also running, as is a franchise-based series High School Musical from Disney Channel. In addition, a seventh season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as a series based on the High Fidelity movie.
Other original film projects announced for the service include multiple remakes, as well as new films, such as:
- 3 Men and a Baby
- Don Quixote
- Father of the Bride
- Flora & Ulysses
- Lady and the Tramp
- Magic camp
- The Paper Wizard
- The Parent Trap
- The Sword in the Stone
- Timmy Failure
- Togo Y Honey
- I Shrunk the Kids.
It is not yet known if these projects will be available on other transmission platforms at some time.
LAUNCH AND PRICE
Disney launched a presentation for its investors on April 11, 2019 to offer a first look at its new service, along with some interesting details. The interesting aspects? The service cost $ 7 a month or $ 70 a year and is expected to arrive in November 2019. The company also showed a prototype of its new service that, frankly, looks very similar to Netflix. The soft and clean interface offers a row of logos and icons at the top of the screen where we can see that of Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, Disney and National Geographic for each of the properties of the service.
Disney also shared some other details, including a roadmap for the first year of the service, which included 25 original series (starting with titles such as The Mandalorian), a complete list of movies (including classics such as Snow White Y The seven dwarfs, The Little mermaid Y Pinocchio, and all 30 seasons of The Simpson.

WHAT DOES NOT INCLUDE?
One thing that Disney + is not doing is getting original Marvel, Star Wars or Disney content from the competition platforms. This should be good news for the fans of the Marvel series of live action on Netflix, for example, as well as recent series like The Gifted Y Runaways.
The availability of the first six films in the franchise of Star wars It is also uncertain at this time, as Disney sold the rights to broadcast US movies. UU., Which apparently also includes the transmission rights, to Turner Broadcasting System in a 2016 agreement that gives Turner control of the films until 2024. Disney has made efforts to repurchase the rights, but no agreement has been reached at this time.
According to Disney's family approach to programming, there will also be no projects classified as “R” available at Disney +. According to several reports, any movie or television series that pushes the boundaries of the typical Disney “PG-13” audience will be diverted to Hulu.
NINTENDO AND DISNEY PLUS
Good news for video game lovers! It was recently confirmed that Nintendo will welcome the new Disney Plus broadcast service with open arms.
Recently, Disney held an informational session with investors and officially presented Disney Plus, a new subscription transmission platform that placed the company's many properties under one digital roof. But not only that. In the promotional material, as discovered by a user of ResetEra, devices such as PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One are shown as potential homes for Disney Plus.
Then they update the publication expressing that Disney "seems to have some kind of agreement with PlayStation … the rest will also come too, but maybe later."
Nintendo Switch is an ideal system for launching Disney Plus on or near it, taking into account the large installation base and the ability to carry the hybrid console on the go. For its part, Disney Plus allows downloads so that subscribers can view the content offline, which is convenient, but fight with the library of games for space.
Initially identified as “Disney Play” by Iger in the first interviews, the official name of the Disney + service, and its logo, was revealed in a presentation of earnings in November 2018, with a press release confirming the details shortly thereafter.
