shopping and comparison guide

Although Huawei has a very powerful high-end, the Chinese manufacturer also has an extensive catalog of mid-range phones with a good value for money. However, the company has a fairly extensive offer with many models in each family, so decide which is the most recommended It can be a complicated task.

To help in the choice of the mobile that best suits your needs, we have prepared this shopping guide and comparative with the best Huawei phones that we can buy. For this, we have selected from the most basic models such as the Huawei Y6 2019 to one of the last flagships of the brand: the Huawei P30. Here are the results.

Our recommended mid-range: Huawei Mate 20 Lite

Huawei 1

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is the best mid-range Huawei mobile in relation to quality / price. It is not the most powerful of its catalog, but it is, without a doubt, the more balanced model. It has a 6.3-inch IPS / LCD screen and FullHD + resolution that, although it may seem very large, it is not so much thanks to Huawei's compaction work.

On its back we have glass, which offers a nice touch and premium feel at hand. We would have appreciated that it was curved to improve grip, but it is compensated with a reduced weight. We all found the double rear camera, which has proven to behave more than correctly in all situations, offering good results in all aspects.

Inside we find a processor Kirin 710, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, a configuration that works, simply and simply. We already use it for day-to-day tasks such as to throw the occasional game, the device behaves well and does not swell the knee. Although where it stands out is in its autonomous, offering up to eight hours of active screen.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is the most balanced device, offering correct performance and a good photographic experience for only 200 euros

Carries Android 8.1 Oreo, and this is its main weakness. However, being the model of last year, it is expected that sooner than later it will update to Android 9 Pie. In fact, the update has been underway since April this year in his native country, so it is a matter of time. As if that were not enough, the company itself confirmed that it also received Android 10 Q. In short, it is a temporary weakness.

Be that as it may, for 200 euros, The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is one of the most recommended devices from the Huawei catalog. It is a balanced device, which performs well in all situations, with a screen that is enjoyed in every way and offers an outstanding autonomy.

Alternative: Huawei P30 Lite

Huawei 2

If you prefer a model this year, the one that takes the silver medal is the Huawei P30 Lite. This has a 6.15-inch IPS / LCD display with FullHD + resolution That looks good when the light hits the front. It is a very enjoyable device that weighs little, although unlike the Mate 20 Lite, it is built in polycarbonate. That does not mean that the sensation in hand is bad, nothing is further from reality.

Inside we have 4 GB of RAM, Kirin 710 processor and 128 GB of internal storage, that is, the same configuration as the Mate 20 Lite, but with some more space for those who want to take advantage of it. It is not the most powerful and something is left behind the Mate 20 Lite, but if the use you are going to make is what you will make of a mid-range, the P30 Lite is an option to contemplate.

The Huawei P30 Lite stands out in the versatility of its camera by incorporating a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens

The photograph is also a positive point of the P30 Lite. Both day and night, the device draws chest and offers correct results and true to what our eyes see. In addition, the camera is very versatile since it has a wide-angle and two-magnification telephoto lens. Also say that your operating system is Android 9 Pie and that the Android 10 Q update is promised by the manufacturer.

The P30 Lite can be purchased for 277.91 euros on Amazon. It is more expensive than the P Smart Z, but the versatility of its rear camera, its smaller thickness and its lower weight They make it a more round terminal. The P30 Lite offers a very complete experience to be a mid-range and in relation to quality / price is recommended.

Our recommended high-end: Huawei Mate 20

Huawei 3

If you want a high-end "triple B", the most recommended option is the Huawei Mate 20. This has a generous 6.53 inch IPS screen With FullHD + resolution that occupies neither more nor less than 88% of the front. You can enjoy watching multimedia content and playing a lot, and as a high-end device, direct sunlight is no problem.

The back is made of glass and has a subtle curvature on the sides that makes the grip comfortable. It is not the least heavy in the catalog, but as in the Mate 20 Lite, the compaction work is excellent. It weighs and measures just and necessary to make it a robust and versatile terminal.

The autonomy of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite is excellent, one of the highest in the Huawei catalog

Little or nothing performance can be said. The Kirin 980 and its seven nanometers they fulfill everything that can be expected from a flagship: reduced opening times, superlative performance in games and day-to-day tasks and a fluid experience. But beyond that, where Mate 20 stakes is in the battery, able to get up to 10 hours active screen. Its 4,000 mAh cheat, but for good.

The photographic section is also outstanding. The Mate 20 gets results more true to reality, with well saturated colors and a correct exposure. The Huawei P20 Pro and the Huawei P30 is not that they are bad, much less, but the camera tends to saturate the colors too much, offering artificial results. If you add a wide angle and a telephoto lens to more than correct photos, you get a versatile and all-terrain camera. All this for 435 euros for the single SIM version.

How to choose a good Huawei mobile

Huawei 18

Before buying a Huawei mobile it is important to tidy up our priorities and think about how we use the mobile and what we really need. Some users may need a better camera, others prioritize autonomy more, and others look for performance above all things.

There are a thousand and one factors, but to summarize and liven up the reading, we have selected some of the Key aspects that must be taken into account to choose a good Huawei mobile:

  • Design and screen: all Huawei phones, in one way or another, are quite similar to each other. The company has a very marked design for some years, so it is important to look at the materials, the resolution of the screen, its size and, of course, the notch,
  • Processor and RAM: Huawei, for a long time, goes from Snapdragon processors and opt for their own chipsets. All follow the Kirin XXX numbering, the first number determining the range. The higher it is, the more powerful it is. With respect to RAM, the most desirable is to have at least 4 GB to be solvent.
  • Internal storage: It is useless to have a monster in power if we can not save games, applications and multimedia content inside. 64 GB is more than enough for moderate use, but it is always appreciated that there is a slot for microSD cards.
  • Battery and autonomous: Here, goat think that more amperage is better, but it doesn't necessarily have to be that way. It also depends largely on software optimization. The most advisable way to measure it is with the hours of active screen, since they allow us to know the real use we have made of the device.
  • OS: And now that we are talking about the operating system, we are in the middle of 2019 and Android 10 Q is just around the corner, so it is recommended that the device we buy has, at least Android 9 Pie and / or EMUI 9.0 or higher.
  • Photographic quality: As with the battery, more megapixels does not mean taking better photos. We must take into account the opening, postprocessing and the possibilities offered by each device depending on the sensors you have in the rear camera.
  • Price: Money is important when we talk about buying a mobile. The last high-end of the firm may not compensate in relation to quality / price, but it is possible that the high-end of last year, which is now discounted, does. The ideal is to find the best benefits and the best results for the least possible money.

What our tests are based on

Huawei 20

Like all the buying and comparative guides that we publish in Xataka, this guide is based on previous experience, the result of many years testing and analyzing all types of devices, from robot vacuum cleaners to mobile phones and tablets. For the case at hand today, we have been using several Huawei smartphones for several weeks, in addition to having previously analyzed them in depth.

The devices chosen for this comparison are all from Huawei. What does this mean? Than we have not selected Honor devices since, although the parent company is the same, they are different brands and philosophers. More precisely, the chosen phones have been the Huawei Y6 2019, the Huawei P20 Pro, the Huawei P30 and P30 Lite, the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Lite and the Huawei P Smart Z. Thus, there are representatives of all ranges.

The software of all the mobiles contemplated in this comparison has been updated to the latest version available before the tests

The structure of this guide is similar to the one we follow when we do an analysis, like the tests we have done throughout this time. We will talk about gaming performance, results of synthetic tests or benchmarks, social media apps, instant messaging and other apps we use in our day. The latter has been essential, since all mobile phones have been used as personal mobile for at least two days.

It should be said that the first thing we have done just turning on the phones has been Check for updates from both the operating system and applications. In that way, we have been able to use them in the same conditions that any user who bought them will use them.

Huawei 13

We start with the external section, where we find configurations for all tastes and colors. All Huawei devices, even with their differences, follow a fairly similar design line and recognizable. Saving the Mate range, almost everyone has the module with the camera in the upper left corner and the fingerprint reader centered with the vertical axis. Just look at them to know what a Huawei is.

Another point they have in common is their size and thickness. The biggest and thickest is that the Huawei P Smart Z, but all the others are around 155 millimeters high, 75 mm wide and between 7.5 and 8 millimeters thick. Weight is also not a problem in any of them. Although the figures dance according to the device, None feel heavy on hand. Everyone feels light, so much so that in some cases (like the P30 Lite) you may not remember that you carry it in your pocket.

HUAWEI Y6 2019

6.1 "

6.15 "

6.3 "

WIDTH (mm)

The most obvious differences are found in the curved edges. These allow to improve the grip, which is useful when we have them in hand for a long time. All the terminals chosen have curved edges in one way or another, the Huawei Mate 20 Lite being the only one that opts for a smooth back. After trying them all, we can say that after the day a curved back is appreciated.

You also have to take into account the materials. The high-end is built in glass, while in the mid-range you bet more on plastic. Be that as it may, the work of Huawei is worth admiring, since the feeling in hand is positive regardless of the material (saving in the Y6 2019, whose touch is too plastic). Keep in mind that glass increases the price, so do not discard the plastic simply because it is plastic. That s, be it plastic or glass, the prints remain marked on all.

Huawei 27

Having said that, there are touches and touches. The plastic of the Huawei Y6 2019 is not the same as that of the P Smart Z. The finish is not the same and, in the case of the second, it shows more care. The same goes for the high midrange crystal. The sensation in hand of the Mate 20 Lite is more than positive, but that of the Huawei P30 feels more premium.

On the other hand, from the table above we can extract one thing: thicker doesn't always mean more battery. For example, the P Smart Z is the thickest and the one with the most battery, the Huawei P20 Pro is much thinner and has the same capacity and the Huawei P30 Lite is slightly thinner than the P20 Pro and has less battery. Why bet then? Less thickness or more battery? In general, second best. A greater or lesser thickness is not much appreciated in the case of Huawei phones and, in the long run, it is appreciated to have more battery.

Huawei 6

Moving on to the lower and upper edges, all have more or less the same elements, so let's highlight two: the charging port and the headphone jack. Except for the Huawei Y6 2019, everyone uses USB type C, which is always a point in favor. On the other hand, everyone has a headphone jack except the Huawei P20 Pro. The location of the jack varies depending on the model, but is usually at the bottom.

As for the fingerprint reader, in the chosen models we have all types: one that does not have (the Y6 2019), one that has it in a button located in the front (P20 Pro), four that have it in the rear and one that has it under the screen (Huawei P30). As a general rule, 1) have a fingerprint reader and 2) better in the back. It is true that the readers under the screen are the future, but at the moment they are not able to match the rear speed.

Huawei 8

We finish this section talking about the camera module, which does not stand out in any of the devices. Leaving aside the number of lenses and the arrangement, in each and every one of them stands out more or less. What does that mean? That if the phone is left face down, the camera risks scratching. It is fixed by putting a cover. The most striking cases are the P30, P30 Lite and P20 Pro.

Precisely because of the almost obligatory cover to which we will have to resort to solve the bulge of the chamber, We do not consider color to be a differential factor. To the taste of the consumer. It is true that the holographic blue color is beautiful, but black may be more elegant or silver more striking. Simply put, it is not worth paying more for one color or another.

Display: IPS for almost everyone and different notches

Huawei 14

Huawei has screens for all tastes. From the IPS / LCD of the most basic models to the OLED of the high-end models. Therefore, we can extract three to take into account: Technology, size and type of notch. The resolution is not something too flashy since, except for the Huawei Y6 2019, which is HD +, all have FullHD + resolution.

Although the pop-up mechanism of the Huawei P Smart Z is striking, our recommendation is bet on the drop-shaped notch. It is more aesthetic than conventional notch and, unlike the pop-up mechanism, we don't have to wait for the camera to unfold for facial unlocking or take a selfie. The experience is quite similar and is gained in speed and, why not say, in durability.

The differences are in the calibration of the screens, the size and the reflections. The screen of the Huawei P Smart Z comes somewhat more warm from the account, like that of the P20 Pro and the Huawei P30. In the rest of the devices, the stock calibration is correct, that is, the targets are white. Be that as it may, the software comes into play, since EMUI allows to modify the colors of the panel to put them to our liking.

The only device that is somewhat below his brothers is the Y6 2019. Not only because of its resolution, but because the maximum brightness is not as high as could be desired for situations in which the light is facing and by reflections. Beyond that, all devices have behaved correctly.

Huawei 23 On the left the Huawei P30, on the right the Huawei P Smart Z.

As for the size, all are around six inches, although the P Smart Z takes the palm with 6.59 inches. It is also, together with the P30 Pro and P30 Lite, the best advantage of the front thanks to the notch in the form of a drop of small size, although the champion in this field is the Huawei Mate 20 with a front 88% busy screen. Depending on the use we will give.

Huawei screens are very well achieved. There are no significant differences in quality, but s there is a leap between the midrange and the high range when we talk about reflections and contrast. It is not excessive, but the panels of the Huawei Mate 20, P30 and P20 Pro look better when the exposure to light is direct and, when we play multimedia content, it can be seen that we are using a high range.

It is easy to see it when you put a Huawei P Smart Z next to a P30 and take both to the street. The Huawei P30 does not suffer so much, while the Huawei P Smart Z slightly emphasizes the knee and shows more reflexes. I insist it is not something that excessively affects the experience in the dayIt simply serves to exemplify the differences between a high-end and a mid-range screen.

Performance: which Huawei mobile is faster?

Huawei 25

This section is summarized in four words: avoid the MediaTek processor. All devices have proven to be more than capable of providing us with the right performance for day-to-day tasks, such as browsing, somewhere else, chatting and watching multimedia content. All except the Huawei Y6 2019. It falls short in every wayIt has a constant lag, little fluid animations and the experience is quite bittersweet.

That said, the rest of Huawei phones use processors HiSilicon Kirin manufactured by TSMC. The differences are evident and the jump between ranges is appreciated. The Kirin 710 are mid-range, the Kirin 970 is the high-end of last year and the Kirin 980 is the one we found in the high-end of 2019. Very similar speeds between these last two, but large differences in the lithograph. As a general rule, less nanometers is better.

Cindonos to the mid-range, The device that has given us the best results is the Huawei Mate 20 Lite. It gives the most correct experience despite being the mid-range of last year. The P30 Lite stays somewhat below and is surpassed by the Huawei P Smart Z. It is not an abysmal difference and we have not noticed problems in any of them except for some other specific pull when opening heavy applications or in certain transitions, but the Mate 20 Lite has left us a better taste. If you want a mid-range Huawei mobile, The Kirin 710 is the option to choose.

Now if you want a high end, the Kirin 980 is more recommended than the Kirin 970. The improvement in nanometers is very noticeable in the day, everything feels much more fluid and, although there is no significant jump in the speed and number of the nuclei, the 7 nanometers do their job. And in which case are you interested in a high range? In case you want to play and take many pictures. If you use the mobile for something more basic, buying a mid-range is a smarter option.

In touch order: Huawei Y6 2019, Huawei P30 Lite, Huawei Mate 20 Lite, Huawei P Smart Z, Huawei Mate 20, Huawei P20 Pro and Huawei P30.

In the upper GIF you can see the opening times of heavy games like PUBG Mobile. The high range shows that it is several steps ahead of the mid-range, although this is something we will enjoy if we are going to play a lot. The Kirin 980 of the Huawei P30 and Mate 20 win by a win against the Kirin 970, which in turn falls well above the Kirin 710.

The results of the synthetic tests also speak for themselves. Geekbench 4 clearly shows the improvement of the Kirin 980 compared to the Kirin 970 and how all devices with the Kirin 710 offer similar performance. It reflects the difference better than AnTuTu, whose results agree but do not seem so true to the reality that we have experienced.

Geekbench 4

To correctly choose a Huawei mobile we must bet on a correct amount of RAM and internal storage. These two elements, as you know, are usually the ones that mark the final price of mobile phones. Normally, the ideal is a minimum 4 GB of RAM, although 6 GB of RAM are desirable for good performance in the future. In relation to internal storage, 64 GB is enough in both cases.

Software: it is important that you have Android 9 Pie

Huawei 9

Each and every Huawei mobile use EMUI, your own customization layer. There are newer and older versions of the devices in front of us right now, but in aesthetic and functional terms, the differences are not so many.

The same happens with Huawei as with Xiaomi: the version of EMUI and Android can end up confusing us. We recommend that instead of looking at EMUI use the Android version as scale. It is better to opt for a terminal with Android 9 Pie than one with Android 8.1 Oreo, mainly for security and performance improvements.

EMUI is a heavy layer and it shows in the performance of mid-range devices

Stay with the idea that EMUI is a very, very heavy layer and that its performance will vary greatly depending on whether you use a medium range or a high range. We have obtained the best experience with the Huawei P30 and the Huawei Mate 20 for obvious reasons: the Kirin 980 processor. It is not that in the mid-range it goes wrong, but you should keep in mind that less powerful devices can see their performance diminished, especially in the long run.

We thoroughly compare the customization layers of Android: this is the software of Samsung, Huawei, LG, Xiaomi, Google and more

In the mid-range (in all to a greater or lesser extent) it can be noted that the animations are not completely fluid, that the loading times are somewhat higher and that, in a way, it costs them a little to move the system with ease. The simplest example is in the navigation of the settings app. If in the high-end models the transition is instantaneous, in the mid-range models, when you press a section (say "Screen") first a blank screen appears and then the options are loaded.

Another aspect to take into account the software is the bloatware, that is, the applications preinstalled by Huawei. Each and every device has a huge amount of preinstalled apps which, for the most part, are not used (see the mirror app, Huawei Video or party mode). They also come with Facebook and Booking preinstalled. We cannot avoid them, but uninstall them.

Photographic comparison

Huawei 11

The only way to talk about photographic quality is to go outside and take pictures, so that is exactly what we have done. Speaking of specifications as such, saving the Huawei Y6 2019, Every signature device has at least two cameras, up to three in the case of Mate 20, P20 Pro, P30 Lite or P30. The third lens is usually a wide angle, although we also find ToF sensors.

In the following table you can find a comparative number of lenses, sensor resolution and focal apertures. It can be clearly seen how, as we go up the range, we have more resolution and more versatile configurations.

The EMUI camera application is very similar in all devices. It is an easy application to use although with many modes that, as a general rule, we will not take advantage of in the day. Basically, the ones that will be used the most will be the automatic, the manual, the video, the portrait and the night mode if available. That said, let's move on to the photos. All of them have been taken in automatic mode and with AI disabled to avoid additional postprocessing and color changes.

Detail and color

Photo X1 Photo of day without any increase.

We start with simple photos, that is, day and with zoom x1 or without magnification. All devices do a good job managing the highlights and shadows. We have no burned areas or completely dark places. The level of detail is correct even in the less powerful model, something that can be seen when extending over the rocks in the lower left area. None of the devices pales, and it is appreciated.

High-end devices tend to get an image closer to reality. Mid-range models, meanwhile, tend to leave the photos more muted and with less vivid colors. Of the four models that are not high end, the Mate 20 Lite is the one that stands out the most, while of the high-end devices, the P family tends to saturate a little more of the account (check the orange areas of the P20 Pro and the green areas of the P30). The result that we liked the most is that of Mate 20 for being, as we said before, the closest to reality.

If we get a little closer to see the colors, we notice exactly the same. The Huawei Mate 20 Lite achieves perhaps less visually striking results than the P30 Lite or the P Smart Z, but closer to what we see. The three high-end devices take excellent photos, but we note that the P family does not quite capture the scene well, highlighting the flower a lot but leaving the dark background. The Mate 20 is the one that gets a more faithful picture.

Wide angle, zoom and portrait

As we said before, one of the benefits of having several lenses is that we can play with them to get other types of photos. Where else we have noticed it is in the Huawei P30 Lite, Mate 20 and P30 because these models have a wide angle. We have the most complete combos in the most recent models (P30 Lite, Mate 20 and P30), since they have wide angle, normal angle and optical zoom.

Wide Angle Normal Zoom Wide angle, no zoom and 2x zoom.

If we put them face to face, we can see that there is a more than obvious jump between the mid-range and the high-end. The Huawei P30 Lite leaves the photos more muted and gray, with flat colors and little contrast. In addition, having no optical zoom, detail is lost when the image is enlarged. The Huawei Mate 20 and the Huawei P30, meanwhile, get more real results, with vivid colors and true to reality, although the wide angle of the P30 Lite gives more faithful results. The Mate 20 leaves the colors somewhat muted.

Be that as it may, not all phones have wide-angle or all have optical zoom. Therefore, to compare them, we have taken a photo without magnification and then we have enlarged twice. That way, we can see if the presence of a optical zoom is noticed and if too much detail is lost when zooming in.

Normal Zoom X2 Extended From top to bottom: Huawei Y6 2019, Huawei P30 Lite, Huawei Mate 20 Lite, Huawei P Smart Z, Huawei Mate 20, Huawei P20 Pro and Huawei P30.

As you can see, the terminals that have optical zoom (Mate 20, P20 Pro and P30) they retain much more detail and make a better color management than the mid-range models. They show more washed edges, less precise colors and worse light management. Of the mid-range, the two that stand out the most are the Mate 20 Lite and the P30 Lite. The first gets more real photos and the second has more effect Wow!.

Taking out "buts" to the high end is complicated. The three devices take really good photos and opt for one or the other depending on what we are looking for: more fidelity or more spectacular. If we strictly yield to which photo best reflects what we are seeing, the Mate 20 takes the gold medal. The Huawei P20 Pro and P30 do not stay behind, but perhaps they define the edges too much and add some contrast that makes the photo very attractive, but less faithful.

Maximum zoom Let's test the maximum zoom of the high range.

And now that we talk about high-end, one of the elements that have defined Chinese flagships for some years is the zoom.

The Huawei Y6 2019 graba regular.
