One of the last phones to reach the market making a lot of noise has been the OnePlus 7 Pro, a terminal that claims to offer a first-class experience at a price that, while not cheap, is certainly less expensive than in its competitors .
In-depth analysis of the OnePlus 7 Pro: the best OnePlus mobile reaches the big leagues
The OnePlus 7 Pro is the most expensive mobile of OnePlus, but it also represents an extraordinary leap in quality compared to the previous ones.
But there is a section that has not conquered many users as it has done the performance or the screen. We refer to the camera.
The quality of the triple camera of this mobile is not bad at all, but the evidence seems to indicate that it is not up to other smartphones of this price. But that is not the problem we are talking about today, although it is related.
The OnePlus 7 Pro has no 3x optical zoom
The Chinese firm announced when the terminal was presented that its OnePlus 7 pro included a telephoto sensor with a 3x optical zoom. This is important.
He did not say at any time that it was a lossless zoom, as he already did in the OnePlus 5 to be able to use a 1.6x zoom and reach 2x through algorithms to improve image clipping. In this case, advertising has influenced the fact that it was a 3x optical zoom. The problem? That it is not.
In Reddit a user has shown that the focal length of the telephoto sensor of this mobile does not coincide with a 3x zoom, but with a 2.2x and is something that is seen when we compare a photo with portrait mode and another with the telephoto in normal mode.
So, we have a photo that expands with 2.2x optical zoom and then cuts (which does not enlarge the image) up to 3x, giving 3x 8 Mpx, but not entirely with optical zoom.
We have verified that when using portrait mode and telephoto we obtain images with a different frame, something that should not be so since both use the same sensor. As you can see, the complete sensor takes a picture with a zoom less than 3x (it is seen in portrait mode) and for 3x zoom the system cuts the original frame.
The reality is that using the same sensor, both photos do not have the same resolution. The first one has 2448 x 3264 pixels and the second one has 3120 x 4160 px. As you can see, in order not to zoom digitally, what the camera does is to crop the image taken.
This may seem like a minor issue, and surely many users don't care, but the perspective changes depending on the zoom we apply, beyond the size of the object, and that does not like the most fans of photography.
The official OnePlus response
The company has issued an official statement in which we see how recognizes that users get a 3x image without loss, but in no case say that it is an image with 3x optical zoom, but 3x without digital zoom and lossless, something that is true.
The OnePlus 7 Pro has 3x zoom without digital zoom or loss of detail. The telephoto camera serves two main purposes: 3x zoom and portrait mode photography. The field of view will change depending on the camera mode. With a 3x zoom, the telephoto camera takes 8 megapixel images without loss. The portrait mode uses the 13 megapixels of the sensor in the camera with telephoto.
OnePlus could have announced the zoom as a 3x zoom without loss or digital zoom but has chosen to call it 3x optical zoom, when it seems that reality is not so.
