Google confirms facial recognition and more phone news

Without waiting for the presentation and without even a leak, Google itself has officially announced some of the next features that we will have in Pixel 4. The company's phone will arrive shortly and the company itself even published a few weeks ago a official image of it. Now we not only have more details, but even a video showing facial unlocking in action.

Google has published in its official blog, the Pixel 4 (which is expected for October this year) to have facial unlocking and face recognition instead of the fingerprint sensor. This new 3D recognition sensor will not only take advantage of the face, but also be used to detect hand gestures. In the video we see for example how a hand gesture is used in the air to change songs in the music player.

Project Soli: 3D recognition and facial unlocking

The technology that makes facial recognition and gesture detection possible it's called Project Soli. Google has explained that they have been developing this technology for the past five years. A little radar sensor at the top of the screen It detects the movements that are generated around it and combines them with "unique software algorithms" to recognize gestures and detect when the user is close. Pixel 4 is going to be the first device to use this Project Soli technology and it is done by Motion Sense, the function that allows you to change songs with gestures, silence calls and more.

This sensor will also be used to introduce facial unblocking in Pixels by 3D scanning of the face. Google indicates that unlike other manufacturers, its new technology not require to have the phone completely in front, but you can detect the face from very varied angles. Nor is it affected by the orientation of the phone, for example we can unlock it with the face if it is face down, as they have commented.

Hardware security, several rear cameras and more novelties of the Pixel 4

Another aspect that the brand has wanted to highlight is that of security, the Pixel 4 processes the information collected by local facial recognition. That is to say, the data is not sent to the Google cloud or to any server yours to perform this task, unlike other more advanced tasks of their services. As we have seen in other products of the company, the Pixel 4 has the security chip and dedicated Titan M.

What the Pixel 4 says goodbye is the notch, Google has preferred to include a thicker frame on the top and fill it with all kinds of sensors. In the image they have shown we see the following from left to right: infrared camera for facial unlocking, front camera, light sensor, audio port, Soli radar chip, spot projector for facial unlocking, another infrared camera for unlocking facial, face illuminator for facial unlocking.

Additionally, in the middle of last month Google officially confirmed the appearance of Pixel 4. In the image we showed we could see a square module with several rear cameras (in principle two next to the proximity sensor and the flash). Google Pixels have always been characterized by betting on a single lens and that is the software the one in charge of processing the images. Pixel 4 will say goodbye to this philosophy and bet to also include more lenses.
